Bee Sanctuary - Rifugio per le api

Le api fanno molto più del miele: il ruolo delle api è fondamentale per la produzione alimentare e per l’ambiente. Un terzo del nostro cibo dipende dall’impollinazione degli insetti: solo in Europa, oltre 4000 tipi di verdure. Molta frutta e verdura (come mele, fragole, pomodori e mandorle) sarebbero duramente colpite da un calo numerico degli insetti impollinatori.
Purtroppo, le api sono in declino, minacciate da pesticidi, perdita di habitat, monocolture, parassiti, malattie e cambiamenti climatici.

Noi - alla Casetta ben Nascosta nel Bosco  - gia' proviamo nel nostro piccolo ad aiutare le api e il pianeta, non tagliado le 'erbacce' e facendo in modo che ci siano sempre fioriture di qualche genere nel nostro terreno (a terra e/o sugli alberi) e una scelta di piante medicinali e benefiche da cui le api possano raccogliere polline e nettare. Ma vorremmo fare di piu'.
Ci siamo interessati a questo tema e nei mesi scorsi abbiamo anche partecipato ad un corso di apicoltura e ci stiamo continuando ad informare di quello che succede nel mondo dell'apicoltura.
Ci piacerebbe mettere in pratica quello che abbiamo imparato e creare un apiario con un paio di arnie e famiglie di api, per aiutare l'impollinazione dei nostri alberi da frutta e aiutarle a sopravvivere. Eventualmente ottenere un poco di miele per autoconsumo familiare e un poco di cera, ma senza fini commerciali.
Tuttavia anche per questo 'piccolo' inizio ci sono dei costi iniziali (attrezzatura, tute, arnie, trattamenti obbligatori ed eventualmente le api stesse) che vanno sostenuti. Vorremmo raccogliere la somma necessaria nel corso dell'estate in modo da acquistare tutto il necessario durante l'autunno e/o l'inverno e preparare l'apiario in tempo per la prossima primavera per iniziare a ospitare le prime api all'inizio della stagione (feb-mar 2020).

Bees do a lot more than make honey: their role is central for the environment and for food production. One third of our food depends from insects pollinating plants: only in Europe, over 4000 types of vegetables. A lot of fruit and veggies (like apples, strawberries, tomatoes and almonds) would be severely impacted by a reduced population of pollinators.
Unfortunately, bees are declining in numbers, endangered by pesticides, loss of habitat, monocultures, parasites, diseases and climate changes.

We - at the Sanctuary of Joy  - already try to help the bees and the planet by not cutting 'weeds' and making sure there are always flowers blooming (either on the trees or on the ground) and a wide choice of medicinal and healthy plants from which the bees can gather pollen and nectar. But we would like to do more.
We started being more and more interested in this theme and in the past couple of months we even attended a beekeeping course and we are continuing to study and to keep an eye on the beekeeping world.
We would like to put into practice what we have learned and create an apiary with a couple of beehives and bee families to help pollinating our fruit trees and even just to help them survive and stay safe. We might of course gather a little bit of honey and wax for home use but without commercial intent.
Anyhow, even for a small start, there are some costs that need to be considered (for the equipment, the overalls, the beehives and eventually the bees themselves). We would like to collect the necessary amount during the summer months, in order to order and buy this equipment during autumn and/or winter and setting up the apiary in time to be able to start keeping the first bees next spring (feb-mar 2020).
