Cultural Ambassadors to Costa Rica

Background
"When are we going to travel to another country, Senorita?" This question is a constant in all of my classes. My students love studying Spanish and learning about the Spanish-speaking world. However, they are often discouraged from thinking about experiencing life abroad because of financial constraints. My goal is to change this through Cultural Ambassadors to Costa Rica.
The Learning Opportunity
Following a competitive application process, six students were chosen to participate in Cultural Ambassadors to Costa Rica last March. As my students enter fields related to health science and research, criminology, engineering, and teaching, they will use Spanish in their lives on a regular basis. This project will help close the exposure gap between my students and students from more affluent backgrounds.
In August, participants began staying after school for extended learning sessions to prepare for their time in Costa Rica. Currently, they are learning about Costa Rica's culture and history. In the upcoming months, they will learn about Costa Rica's ecosystems and how this country carries out its reputation as one of the world's greenest countries. They are excited to design and carry out a Go Green campaign at our school this spring, connecting the experience to theirs at home.
While in Costa Rica, students will have the opportunity to visit some of the world's most diverse ecosystems and use their Spanish skills as they complete language challenges with Costa Rican locals. They will also communicate in Spanish with young people at a school they will visit. Students will leave Costa Rica as true global citizens. Once they return to their communities, they will share their adventures in a minimum of three public forms.
In class, we often discuss what it means to be a cultural ambassador. This educational adventure of a lifetime will help bring this central theme full circle. As the students experience Costa Rica, they will be able to share their culture with others. When they return to our community, they will have a deepened knowledge of the Spanish language and will serve as cultural ambassadors as they use Spanish in their future careers and for recreation. This is an experience that certainly serves them in the present as they expand their experiences, but undoubtedly will change the trajectory of their future.
Cost Breakdown
Travel insurance, airfare, lodging, tour guides, meals for nine days provided by EF Educational Tours, per student: $2,255
Passport fee per student: $135
Total per student: $2,390
Total for 6 students: $14,340
