Carsun's Volunteer Trip to Fiji!
Don protégé
Dear Friends and Family,
A couple of months ago, an organization named Global Leadership Adventures (GLA) made a presentation at my school about their summer service-oriented volunteer programs abroad that take place around the globe. GLA operates their volunteer programs in authentic, non-tourist communities. Through service work, high school students are given the opportunity to step up in a global context in partnership with the communities they serve and help make a profound impact.
Each trip has specific activities which help the country, town, or village thrive, and in addition to service, we will visit their landmarks and venture out of our comfort zone to grow as people.
Out of the various trips offered, I chose the Empowering Island Communities trip to Fiji which will take place from July 31st through August 20th. I read the descriptions of all the trips offered by GLA; they are all amazing! However, the one to Fiji resonated with me the most.
During my excursion, as described by the GLA program literature,
“.....you’ll contribute to one of four meaningful service projects. Learn how the geographical distribution of this population limits access to resources, while offering solutions through hands-on assistance. You may be placed in the education group where you will become a friend and role model to local youth as you teach lessons and improve the learning environment at their school, or be part of the marine team as you monitor and collect data for ongoing research to establish a marine sanctuary. Perhaps you will construct and maintain water filtration systems, or implement food sustainability projects. No matter which team you are a part of, you will be assisting rural island communities in protecting their way of life for generations.”
In order to make this trip a reality, I am seeking to raise $4500 which will cover all the costs (including the airfare) necessary for me to be able to go. This amount is actually the remainder after I was fortunate to recently have received a $1500 scholarship from GLA towards the initial tuition cost.
So I am writing to all of you today to please help me go on this eye-opening journey. I am extremely excited for this upcoming opportunity, and knowing the people who love and care about me helped made it possible will make it that much more special. I’m extremely grateful and humbled by any help you are able to give.
I will be sending updates throughout this GoFundMe campaign with other fundraising events I will be coordinating with my family.
I cannot wait to tell you all about my time sitting with village elders and learning how to fish like the local Fijians!
