Carson Fitzgerald Medical Expenses

Monday, September 10th, 2018  Andrea was at work and got the phone call no parent ever wants to receive.

"Mrs. Fitzgerald, I am so sorry to call you like this but your son has been in a car accident."

Carson's car had rolled over, hit a tree and was on fire.  Due to the heroic action of neighbors and strangers, he was pulled from the burning vehicle.  He was taken by EMS to Round Rock where it was  determined his burns were severe and required additional care by a hospital with a burn care unit. Immediately plans were made to transfer him to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio where he was greeted by a team of at least 20 people.

Carson suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to both of his legs from the knees down. His right leg was the worst.  His right foot was broken in multiple places which required surgery. He had a small fractures in his pelvis,  shoulder, and L4,  but the burns were the biggest concern at that point.

He spent 3 days in ICU where he was in constant and excellent care provided by the doctors and nurses at BAMC.  Carson underwent several surgeries to clean, debride, and care for the significant burns he endured.  His right leg was monitored on an hourly based with Dopler to ensure his foot and leg was receiving adequate blood flow, which is a serious concern with burn patients in order to save the extremity.  He was moved to the burn care unit of the hospital were he continued to get excellent care.  He underwent several more surgeries to clean the areas and receive skin grafts.

Ultimately, on September 24th, Carson underwent surgery that required amputation of his toes.  The blessing is the medical team did not have to take as much as originally thought.  Additionally, the wounds appear to be healing well.

As you can imagine, the toll on his family has piled up emotionally, physically, and financially.  As each day passes,  they will acquire tremendous medical bills.  There is no way at this point to assess the medical bills that will be accumulating as a result of the accident, his hospital stay, and recovery beyond. This is the reason we have established this Go Fund Me account for their family.

All funds raised will be given to the Fitzgerald family directly to help pay for Carson’s medical bills.  Any funds received that are beyond their bills will be donated to a charity.  Currently, the family is considering  either the BAMC burn unit or the Ronald McDonald House, both of which have been so compassionate to Carson and his family.  We will update this information as the financial medical situation is more concrete.

If you you’d like to reach out to the Fitzgerald family and those closest to him with words of support, or if you want more information regarding the accident, feel free to join the Caring Bridge set up for Carson.
