Carnell Hampton's Road to Recovery

Carnell’s journey first began in August 2020, when he was admitted to St Joseph Hospital, Orange, CA with COVID-19. Carnell spent the next month battling for his life in the ICU on a ventilator. After about a month, Carnell was able to get off the ventilator and progress towards getting back home to his Wife, Ariana, and two-year old son, Carter. Carnell’s heart and mind were fully ready to be home, as his wife Ariana was pregnant with their second son, when unexpected complications from COVID-19 kept him hospitalized.
During his time battling the virus, Carnell had developed bilateral foot and toe wounds that pushed back his discharge date greatly. This marked the beginning of a long journey to recovery, which initially began with him getting all his toes amputated. The process after the initial amputations was long and tedious. For the next 208 days, he was put through biweekly debridements and surgeries to place skin grafts to heal his feet, in the hopes of saving as much of his legs as possible. While Carnell was going through these tough procedures and therapies, life outside of the hospital did not pause. Him and Ariana welcomed his second son, Nathan, into their family, and it would be many months before Carnell could meet his newborn son in person for the first time.
On May 20, 2021, Carnell leaves the hospital ready to finish his recovery strong at an acute rehab facility for two weeks, then back home to his family. Both him and his family realize the many adjustments that will have to be made when he returns home as he learns to navigate his new beginning. Carnell leaves the hospital as a below-the-knee amputee on the right leg, and without toes on the left, and a long journey of therapy ahead of him. For the first few months, Carnell will mainly be in a wheelchair and down the road will be fitted for prosthetics. Though he leaves physically with “less”; mentally, emotionally and spiritually he’s leaving with so much more.
Throughout his whole journey, Carnell has remained joyful, courageous, and positive. He quickly became everyone’s favorite patient, making friends ALL OVER the hospital. Even in the most obscure places and situations. He gives a positive light to all who know him, and encouraged us in some of the hardest times we have all experienced. Often times, healthcare is seen as helping patients, but Carnell gave all of us hope and light when we needed it most. He is truly an amazing human, incredibly strong, and deserves the world!
Carnell and his family have been through so much! Due to the current circumstances, Carnell has been unable to work and will continue to be unable to work as he heals. Him and his Family are kindly asking for monetary donations so they can pay for new necessities for their home, unexpected medical costs, and expenses to just truly enjoy life. Let’s help Carnell live his NEW life to the fullest!
