In Loving Memory of Carmen Sifuentes

Firstly, I want to thank you for taking the time to click on this link and finding it in your heart to at least read about our loved one. My name is Sandra Garcia, and on behalf of the Sifuentes- Garcia family I am reaching out to you in the hopes that you can help us put my sister in law to rest. This last week has been a once in a lifetime struggle for most of us in Texas, but my nephews have had to endure this along with the loss of their beloved mother.
On Thursday, February 18, 2021 after almost a month of being hospitalized and intubated due to COVID 19, my sister in law, Carmelita “Carmen” Sifuentes, passed away due to irreparable lung damage and complications due to this horrible virus. Carmen had always been a strong willed woman that could handle her own and always did her best to overcome any trial life threw her way. This virus had managed to overcome her physically and although she physically struggled, her heart and mind were determined to fight and she fought with all of her being until the end.
She had always been a fighter, growing up in a family of 9 siblings in rural Mexico, she knew at a young age what it was to literally find a way to survive. Becoming a young mother was not easy, but she gave herself completely to her son and did everything she could to protect him and provide for him. Eventually this brought her to a crossroads in her life; finding the courage to escape an abusive husband to save herself and her newborn son, and she did. Almost as if out of a movie script she risked her life to save her son and herself and left never to look back.
The American dream was right across the border and for a young single mother, in poor rural Mexico, this seemed like an impossible feat, but not for Carmen. Carmen had been equipped with what very few have: determination, perseverance, tough grit, and above all love for her son. She made her way across and began what we all do, struggle on the daily to survive. Her motivation, her son.
Overtime, she remarried and along with her husband raised four more sons. Five boys. She worked their entire childhood in order to make sure they had what they needed and every day she had dinner made, home in order, and would always show them love. They were and always will be her life. From the oldest to the youngest, they can all say she has never let them down. She was their number one supporter and when things went down a difficult road for them, she was there to help them along; doing anything and everything she could to get them back on track. She was always there for them in good times and in rough times.
Sadly, on January 25, 2021 she had to be admitted because the COVID 19 virus had become too much for her to handle at home. The familiar cough was overpowering her, and her lungs struggled to function. Even talking was painful for her. Her last phone calls were on January 29, 2021, shortly before she was intubated. She made a few, mainly to her sons, but a particular one was to her mother. She never forgot a birthday, much less her mother’s. Amid her suffering and pain she knew she had to wish her a happy birthday. God granted her that wish, and she managed to quietly speak to her mother for the last time. She wished her a happy 82nd birthday and told her to never forget that she had a daughter that loved her very much.
That was Carmen, a woman that always put her loved ones before herself. She loved with all of her being and now all of that love is what has held her family together. Her sons, husband, parents, siblings and extended family are overwhelmed with pain and grief at this unexpected loss of who they saw as invincible.

Mi nombre es Sandra García y en nombre de la familia Sifuentes-García, me comunico con ustedes con la esperanza de que puedan ayudarnos a poner a descansar a mi cuñada. Esta última semana ha sido una lucha única en la vida para la mayoría de nosotros en Texas, pero mis sobrinos han tenido que soportar esto junto con la pérdida de su amada madre.
El jueves 18 de febrero de 2021 después de casi un mes de estar hospitalizada e intubada por COVID 19, mi cuñada, Carmelita “Carmen” Sifuentes, falleció por daños pulmonares irreparables y de más complicaciones por este horrible virus. Carmen siempre fue una mujer de voluntad fuerte que podía manejar los suyos y siempre hacía todo lo posible para superar cualquier prueba que la vida le presentara. Este virus había logrado vencerla físicamente y aunque batalló para luchar en cuerpo, su corazón y su mente estaban decididos a luchar y luchó con todo su ser hasta el final.
Ella siempre fue una luchadora, se crio en una familia de 9 hermanos en una zona rural de México, y supo a una temprana edad lo que era literalmente encontrar una manera para sobrevivir. Convertirse en una madre joven no fue fácil, pero ella se entregó por completo a su hijo e hizo todo lo posible para protegerlo y mantenerlo. Finalmente, esto la llevó a la difícil decision de escapar de un esposo abusivo. Encontró el coraje para salvarse a ella y a su hijo recién nacido, y lo hizo. Casi como si saliera de un guión de película, arriesgó su vida para salvar a su hijo y a ella misma y se fue para nunca mirar atrás.
El sueño americano estaba justo al otro lado de la frontera y para una joven madre soltera, en una zona rural pobre de México, esto parecía una hazaña imposible, pero no para Carmen. Carmen estaba preparada con lo que aveces muy pocos tenemos: determinación, perseverancia, dureza y, sobre todo, amor por su hijo. Se abrió camino, cruzó la frontera y comenzó lo que todos hacemos, luchar a diario para sobrevivir. Su motivación, su hijo.
Con el tiempo, se volvió a casar y junto con su esposo crió a cuatro hijos más. Cinco barones. Se dedicó a trabajar durante toda su vida para asegurarse de que tuvieran todo lo que necesitaran sus hijos y también todos los días tenía la cena lista, la casa en orden, y siempre les mostraba amor y cariño. Fueron y siempre serán su vida. Desde el mayor hasta el más joven, todos pueden decir que ella nunca los ha defraudado. Ella era su apoyo número uno y cuando las cosas iban por un camino difícil para ellos, ella estaba allí para ayudarlos; haciendo todo lo posible para guiarlos y tratar de llevarlos por el mejor camino. Ella siempre estuvo ahí para ellos en las buenas y en las difíciles.
Lamentablemente, el 25 de enero de 2021 tuvo que ser ingresada porque el virus COVID 19 se había vuelto demasiado para ella en casa. La tos familiar de este virus la dominaba y sus pulmones luchaban por funcionar. Incluso hablar le resultaba doloroso. Sus últimas llamadas telefónicas fueron el 29 de enero de 2021, poco antes de que la intubaron. Hizo algunas, principalmente a sus hijos, pero una en particular fue para su madre. Nunca olvidaba un cumpleaños, mucho menos el de su madre. En medio de su sufrimiento y dolor, supo que tenía que desearle un feliz cumpleaños. Dios le concedió ese deseo y le dio la fuerza para hablar con su madre por última vez. Le deseó un feliz cumpleaños y le dijo que nunca olvidara que tenía una hija que la amaba mucho.
Asi era Carmen, una mujer que siempre anteponía a sus seres queridos a sí misma. Amaba con todo su ser y ahora todo ese amor es lo que ha mantenido unida a su familia. Sus hijos, esposo, padres, hermanos y su familia extendida están abrumados por el dolor y angustia por esta pérdida inesperada de quien veían como invencible.
