My beautiful best friend Carla Evans was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia 8 years ago at the age of 19 and her life was turned upside down overnight.
Carla went through evasive procedures, intensive treatments and chemotherapy, however she was the strongest person and always knew she would kick cancers butt! After 3 rounds of chemo and a new trial, Carla was on her way to being in remission. After 5 years, she was considered cured and could start living her life again.
After 7 years of being cancer free and enjoying life, Carla knew something wasn't quite right and attended an appointment with her consultant at QA hospital in July. The news that followed was devastating.... the Leukaemia had returned. Again Carla's world was flipped on it's head and everyone's focus was how soon treatment could start to rid this awful illness.
Carla has had strong rounds of chemo and a stem cell transplant, but this Leukaemia is being bloody stubborn!! After a discussion with her consultant at Southampton General, Carla was told more devastating news.... all treatment options had been tried and there was nothing further that could be done. Well as you can imagine, this was definitely not an option!!
Carla has now been referred to Kings College in London to start a trial and requires a drug called Venetoclax which have shown to have good results in patients with AML.
Unfortunately it is not yet licensed and would need to be paid for by the patient. Carla's doctors have tried to ask for it on a compassionate basis, however this is no longer available.
