Carla Has Experienced a Setback

Donation protected
Our sister, Carla, has had a serious setback with her medical situation. (If you are not familiar with her story, please read below.)

What has happened...

After the amputation, several other surgeries, and a stay at rehab, Carla returned to work in April and was excited to get back to her routine and new life.  Unfortunately, within that week of returning to work, the doctors discovered she had an infection in the bone where her arm was amputated.

She had to return to the hospital and have another surgery and more bone removed in hopes of clearing out the infection. These attempts were unsuccessful. She was then placed on oral antibiotics that also proved to be ineffective.  Her last option was to take very strong liquid antibiotics through an IV.  She is given these antibiotics 3 times a day, every 8 hours, with each dose taking 3 hours to course through her body.  Because of this strict and important schedule, she has been hospital-bound and unable to return to work.

Carla will soon move to a nursing facility and live there until the end of June to continue receiving these important treatments. If the infection does not clear up, then she will have to have more of her arm amputated, which will be a more serious and heartbreaking setback.

Carla needs your help with...

Carla is a fighter and very determined to return to work, but she cannot because of needing this important medicine on such a strict schedule. She continues to face the financial challenges of being a single mom without an income during this time. We are helping to raise 2 months of living expenses while she is unable to work and continues to fight for her health and focus on her recovery.

It's hard to ask...

It is hard for us to ask for help again, but we know our family has a lot of loving and generous people in our lives who would want to help Carla and her son Reed during this difficult time. Our family cannot thank everyone enough for their previous generosity and any amount donated is greatly appreciated.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

ORIGINAL STORY

Our sister, Carla...
Our sister Carla is a strong, hard-working, single mom of an amazing 12 year old, Reed.

What happened...
On January 14, Carla had a pain and paralysis in her left arm so drove herself to the emergency room. That ER was not able to handle her condition so she was airlifted to Florida Hospital which has a special vascular surgery center. We eventually came to learn that Carla has a blood disorder that lied dormant since birth that causes her body to generate blood clots.

Within 24 hours of getting to the vascular center, she had three emergency surgeries to try to remove the clots. They proved to be temporary measures as her body just kept generating more. They put her on blood thinners with the hopes that it would dissolve the clots. The next 36 hours were a waiting game to see if she would live, lose her arm, or lose her other limbs too. It was the scariest time in our family's lives and we feared that Reed would lose his mom.

Gratitude is the Attitude...
Thankfully she survived and all they had to amputate was just below her elbow. Carla feels blessed and lucky to know it could have been worse. Her smile, jokes, and all around positive attitude inspires everyone. Carla is looking forward to getting back to work, life, and her all around daily routine for her and Reed. She has to complete rehab first, however, where she'll learn to adjust to her new life.

Carla needs your help with...
Carla has made it through the worst but now faces the financial challenges of being a single mom without an income during this time in the hospital and her recovery. She loves her job and is very motivated to get back to work. We are helping her raise 3 months of living expenses to help her avoid the financial hardship that often comes with serious medical conditions and let her focus on healing, getting back to work, and loving on her little boy.

It's hard to ask...
Those who know us know it's a challenge for Carla and for our family to ask for help. But we know our family has a lot of loving, generous people in our lives who would want to help Carla and Reed during this challenging time. We all feel very grateful to know there are such good people in our lives who have expressed a desire to help.
