Caring for Luna Adelstorp

On April 9th, Luna Adelstorp was hit by a car while walking across a pedestrian crossing in Australia. Luna, who is 20, was just beginning a new adventure on a visit in Australia. Luna was breathing but unconscious when emergency medical arrived. She was immediately transferred to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where they have specialist neurosurgeons.
Luna had bleeding, significant swelling in her brain and multiple skull fractures. She was operated on to relieve the pressure building in her skull and to stop the bleeding and was put into a deep sedation to allow her brain to heal.
Helene, Luna’s mum, flew from their home in Bali to Australia within hours of the accident to be by her side. Luna is currently on a ventilator and will remain in deep sedation for several more days. The signs so far are positive - the swelling is gradually reducing and her condition is stable but critical. Luna has sustained a significant brain injury but we do not know the prognosis at this stage or how long Luna’s recovery will take. There will likely be rehabilitation for many months to come.
Luna is strong and healthy. Her family are by her side talking to her and making the environment as healing as possible. The doctors and nurses have been exemplary with their care and communication. We are hoping for Luna to make a complete recovery but until she wakes up we simply do not know what lies ahead.
As so many of you know, Luna is a beautiful, compassionate person who cares deeply about her community and environment and seeks to make her world a better place. She is fiercely loved by her family, friends and community.
Luna and Helene do not live in Australia, the ongoing and unexpected expenses over the coming months will be significant. Donations will go towards flight, air bnb near the hospital, and living expenses in Australia (their home is Bali). We will provide an update on medical expenses shortly.
