Bryce’s battle with Evan’s Syndrome

UPDATE FOR BRYCE:
Bryce Wadsworth is a Senior at Patchogue-Medford High School and was born and raised in the Patchogue-Medford area. At the beginning of his Senior year in high school, he started experiencing some, what was thought to be, minor medical issues like nose bleeds and bruising that would take a long time to heal.
After two separate week-long stints at the hospital and a wide array of medical testing, he was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease called Evan’s Syndrome. In essence, Bryce’s immune system produces anti-bodies which normally are useful in assisting the body to fight off sickness, but in his case the anti-bodies attack White-Blood Cells and Platelets. Unfortunately, this rare medical condition has no known cures and people with this alignment live with the uncertainty of when or even if the disease will go into remission.
In Bryce’s case, a complication to the Evan’s Syndrome, is he is now experiencing some Gastrointestinal issues which now need to be monitored and treated by another type of IV infusion.
Fortunately, with the care of some wonderful Stony Brook University Doctors, Bryce has been put on a regiment of medicines which includes intravenous and oral that is suppressing his immune system to allow his White-Blood Cells and Platelets to replenish. Even though, the medicines seem to be working, the perfect “cocktail” hasn’t been achieved as of yet, so the battle continues.
For those who know Bryce, know that he is an energetic and athletic young man who loves to participate in sports. He was a member of the wrestling and lacrosse teams from Middle School to present. Unfortunately, he had to forfeit his Senior Wrestling Season due the illness and presently is not cleared to play lacrosse this Spring. But he is following the medical advice of his doctors and keeping a positive attitude that he will be cleared very soon.
Through this whole experience, Bryce has had his ups and downs of course, but has battled through and has carried himself with such maturity, that has made his family extremely proud. He and his family are keeping positive thoughts and prayers.
Bryce and his family would like to extend a very gracious and humble Thank You to all who have supported and continue to support them throughout this journey. They would like to especially thank the Patchogue-Medford Community Members, past and present, as always, rally around one of their own and express their support with their generosity and kindness.

He’s a fun loving, bright, caring and athletic young man who dreams of going away to college and playing lacrosse. Evans syndrome is a very rare autoimmune disease in which a person’s own antibodies attack his platelets and white blood cells, which deliver oxygen to body tissues, platelets (which help blood clot), and/or white blood cell that helps fight infection. There is no known cause or cure for Evans. Bryce is working with his dr's to find the right treatment form to be able to possibly play spring Lacrosse to play sports. Bryce had a dream to go away to college and right now that on hold because he needs to be home for is treatments which he is in Stonybrook Hospital 2-3 times away for blood work and infusions . It’s a huge disappointment for him, sports has always been an outlet for him and he thrives at it. Unfortunately, he has been in and out of StonyBrook Hospital. They ran every test on him that you could imagine in effort determine that it was Evans. Bryce has had 6 IVIG infusions, 9 days in the hospital 2 IV steroids infusions bone marrow and lymph node biopsies and the doctors are still trying to figure out what treatments are best for him. He’s been a trooper while being poked and prodded at. Medical therapy is the mainstay of management as this will now be part of his lifetime care that he will need to manage. best interest. along with the mounting medical bills will create a financial hardship for them. They are in need of help with their medical bills, and basic monthly expenses . As his mothers best friend I’m asking for your support of this wonderful family, it is greatly appreciated.
