This past December I was told those scary words again, the 3 words I never wanted to hear again,

"It is Cancer.”

It started in 2013 when I had first been told those world shifting, reality altering words.

I spent many days then and again now in the Oncology, Chemo and Radiation waiting rooms at Lakeridge Hospital in Oshawa.

After four years, being back in those all too familiar rooms reminded me of all the emotions of sitting and waiting, left only with thoughts and anxiety, wondering just how many more times I would be here. Often, I found I was the youngest one in there.

When I look around the room I see sad, sullen and perhaps scared faces of patients and their loved ones.  There was really not much available to help comfort, distract or help pass the time but some old magazines and a few baskets of unfinished balls of yarn fashioned into what looks to be dishcloths or perhaps a scarf.

It was then that I realized I wanted to do something, not only for the patients, but their loved ones going through this with them as well.

So that is when I decided I wanted to create baskets and a cart that has something for everyone.  I am asking for donations so we can purchase adult colouring books, journals, sketchbooks and anything else that may help people share their experiences, what they are dealing with, extend their support and express themselves in their own way.  A basket full of pencil crayons, sharpeners, a deck of cards, magazines subscriptions, crosswords & more.

Here are the fundraising target levels:

Level 1 - $500 - Create one basket and cart for the Oncology Ward main waiting room

Level 2 - $750 - $250 donation to Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre*

Level 3 - $1000 - Additional cart for Radiation Centre waiting room

Level 4 - $1250 - Total $500 donation to Hearth Place

Level 5 - $1500 - Additional cart for Chemotherapy  Room

Any additional funds will go towards sustainability of the program (magazine subscriptions and refills of supplies)

Join me in giving other patients and loved ones feel connected to their greater community. Perhaps we brighten a day, make a difference when it counts and let people know they are not alone, that they matter and people care.

*For the past 21 years, in the comfort of a home like atmosphere, Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre has been committed to providing community support for patients and their families dealing with cancer through peer support, information, a resource centre, wellness programs and an ongoing lecture and discussion series.  Caregiver and bereavement support, and programs for children, and teens are available as we recognize the impact cancer has on the whole family. We also feel very privileged to be able to provide emotional, practical and social support for families who have a child diagnosed with cancer and their siblings through monthly family support groups, sibling support, fun days and in-home therapeutic programs for children with cancer.

*Hearth Place receives no government funding and relies on private and in memoriam donations and community and corporate support of our fundraising events to sustain our operations.
