Car crash = New Friends

Dear Friends: Yesterday as I was returning home around noon, I saw police lights a few houses down, and what looked like a pickup truck flipped over on its roof.  Tommy and I went to see what happened, fearing the worst.  A young couple was sitting on the curb, sobbing, with their sad belongings strewn about them on the street.  Neighbors Pat and Mary Maher were helping them collect their things and piece together what happened.  They had been turning from our (busy) street onto a side street when a speeding SUV came from the opposite direction and t-boned them.  I don't know how they got out alive and unhurt, but they did.

As we spoke to Trenell and Dana, we found out that they had been living in the truck for 3 weeks, having left everything in Michigan to be out here for his father, who has advanced cancer and is at the VA Hospital in La Jolla. His mother had died 4 months earlier.  While not completely destitute (when he at least had his truck), they are now out of options and have no place to go and no friends in the area.  Trenell had been homeless in the past, but for the past 5 years he has had walls.  Until three weeks ago.  Until yesterday.

So, Tommy and I invited them into our home, and they are staying at our house for a few days.  Pat and Mary have brought clothes, containers for their belongings, and offers of pizza and other assistance.

They are delightful people, and Trenell even fixed a backed up sink for us. Our cat is in love with them.   My generous neighbor Pat suggested we start a Go Fund Me to help Dana and Trenell get either a truck or van, or maybe a small camper, so they can have a safe place while they care for his dad and have a springboard to rebuild after he passes.  $10,000 should get them a decent vehicle that doesn't require a lot of repairs and pay for tax, title, registration, maybe a few tanks of gas.

Will you join us in helping out this couple? They are used to living on very little, but having a safe place to sleep and to keep their tools and belongings will be an enormous help to them.  We are trying to get them funded in less than a week so they can avoid car rental costs.

Thank you very much.
