Capture the Movement: An Outdoor Photo Exhibit

Donation protected
Capture the Movement is an outdoor photo exhibit celebrating the work of Black photographers covering the Black Lives Movement since May 2020. The event will take place on Sunday, October 4th, from 12-5pm at the Bed Stuy Restoration Plaza.

Featuring 60 photographers, this collection of photos is an effort to demystify the stereotype of the protester, amplify the work of Black image makers, and connect with new audiences that want to support the BLM movement.

How will these funds help?
- To support the photography exhibit, we are fundraising $1500 to cover cost to printing, mounting, and installation costs in a large outdoor tent.
-In addition to the exhibit, the organizers will host a short panel featuring the photographers. The event will include live music, art painting, photography workshop for youth, voter registration table, and food vendors.

About the Exhibit
Since the death of George Floyd in May, protestors have taken to the streets across the country demanding change and to end police brutality & killings of Black Lives. Protests have accumulated over 115 days and continue daily. Within the movement we have become a family from diverse backgrounds, professions, ages, gender expression, and professional backgrounds. We are composed of photographers, artists, videographers, musicians, students, mothers, sons, fathers, daughters, and babies. We are documentarians. We are participants in history and we capture it for everyone.

About the Creator of this Event
Shawn Batey, black woman, activist & protestor, had the idea to push the movement in a visual form while amplifying the work of Black photographers, who often are not given recognition. As a documentary filmmaker, she has been filming in the protests. She is a union member of IATSE Local 52 and works as Props Assistant in the film & television Industry.

Shawn feels the incredible powerful coverage of this movement needs to move beyond Instagram & beyond an image on a phone, where it is primarily viewed. With the heightened political climate and a misrepresented portrait of a protestor this one day photo exhibit was created. The images are necessary large scale where the viewer is drawn into the environment. It is Shawn’s hope that this exhibition can travel or be replicated across the country to empower Black & Brown communities as well as attract new supporters and allies.
