Capital City Cancer Classic NJ Fundraiser 2021

Capital City Cancer Classic NJ is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to advocate, educate, encourage, and support the community, especially in under-served areas of color, regarding various types of cancers. The organization was founded in 2019 by two-time cancer survivor Joe Richardson, who was a basketball coach during both bouts with cancer. As a way of giving back, CCCCNJ hosts an annual basketball showcase designed to raise funds for reputable cancer treatment centers, provide scholarships to high school seniors pursuing post-secondary educational opportunities, and support local families dealing with cancer.

In 2020, CCCCNJ held its first annual basketball showcase. This successful event resulted in a $6000 donation to Fox Chase Cancer Center, two $500 senior book scholarships, and the financial and emotional support of a local family dealing with cancer. In 2021, the Covid pandemic prevented us from holding the event. On January 8, 2022, we are excited to host this year’s annual showcase, which will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but we need your help. Due to an increase in Covid cases, we cannot have spectators, which will affect the revenue generated from admissions and concessions.

With a heavy heart, we share the news that the 13-year-old young man we would honor at this year’s event lost his battle with cancer. In his short time, he touched many lives, young and old, with his positive attitude, encouraging words, kind heart, team mindset, and intelligence. Although he was a multi-sport athlete, his ultimate desire was to play college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes. To preserve his legacy, CCCCNJ will dedicate the Most Outstanding Player Award for each game in his honor.
