Tumor Removal & Open Heart Surgery



Carolina Cano immigrated to the US from Colombia and is one of the most driven students within her school. She taught herself guitar and piano, and took seven AP’s while working a full time job to support her family (this is all after learning a completely new language). Recently, Carolina sought out medical care for a problematic ear infection, without insurance, only having $80 in her pockets as the cost for her visitation resulted in $400, this all being days after her father was admitted into the hospital for meningitis and spinal apses. After serveral screenings, Carolina was diagnosed with a tumor built on her nasal sinuses, and it has resulted in complete hearing loss in her right ear. Her first invasive surgery begins mid-january to remove and retain her hearing.

Right now, her family doesn’t have insurance and she needs to begin treatment to remove the tumor, restore her hearing, and care for her father's medical expense from his recovering heart bypass.

Carolina has been balancing applying for college/scholarships, attending community college courses, and high school all while working to fund her and her fathers surguries. She ranked 4 out of 413 students in her senior class, and maintains a 4.88 GPA.

This is a child who is on track to get scholarships to Duke University and wants to be a female engineer.
