Candida Abreu Needs Our Help--Artists Helping Artists.

On our journey in life we meet all kinds of people. Working as an art teacher I am lucky to encounter many wonderful people in my life, mostly artists from all walks of life. Some just come for a brief encounter others stay friends for life.  That is how I meet my secret watercolor sisters. Year after year the same group of women signed up to be in my watercolor class. Since it was always full the class was taken off the roster and called “the secret watercolor class.” Through the years we all became like family and humorously called ourselves the Secret watercolor sisters.

Now one of these amazing women and artist, Candida Abreu has fallen on hard times and she needs immediate help getting back on her feet.  Even though she is a cancer survivor and has suffered other heartbreaking life experiences, she is always the most positive, caring warmhearted and cheerful person you could ever meet. When diagnosed with breast cancer and had to go through chemo and lost her hair.  She still stayed positive looking at the bright side, saying she could eat as much chocolate as she wanted when her doctor said it was better if she gained weight than lost.

With the cancer came lots of medical bills which depleted her savings and 401K, making her social security and her son the only source of income. Now her son has been laid off from work, and she can’t pay the bills. Her biggest worry is that she might lose her house.

Candida worked her way up from a life of poverty in the Bronx to working in a bank in New York, saving her money over the years and buying her small house in NJ where she retired 15 years ago. She is a very proud and honorable woman and would never ask for any handouts. However with no family to help her and having limited funds myself, I am reaching out to my community of friends, other artists and other people for help to save Candida’s home and helping her get back on her feet. Any amount is appreciated if you see in your heart to donate to the Candida Abreu Fund. All money donated will go directly to Candida and I know she will be forever grateful and humbled by your generosity and caring. Thank you, Lena Shiffman
