Cancer Unmasked Art Project for Burning Man 2022

Donation protected
Three years ago this month, I went through chemo and radiation treatment and survived it. It was the most horrific yet transformative experience of my life. Most people don't want to talk about it, yet it's something we all have to face in one way or another. 1 in 4 Americans will get cancer in their lifetime and many more will be affected by it.  There is no way I could have survived it without the incredible support of my family, friends and medical team.  This is a very personal art piece to me and many others.

Rons Treatment Team Gallery

Cancer Unmasked is a sacred space dedicated to cancer victims, survivors, caregivers and loved ones designed to be experiential and interactive. A large 3D wooden mask at the entrance invites one inside. Participants will have to make their way through a "Curtain of Fear".  Once inside they will be faced with the "Gallery of Masks."  Each mask was made for an individual undergoing radiation treatment. Lighting will draw participants to examine each mask in detail.  Many will be covered with personal cancer stories.  Leaving the gallery, the participant must go through the "Gateway of Swords" before beginning their exit through the "Sky of Stars" where they can leave or take a star-momento to represent someone that was a hero during their journey or a loved one that fought the good fight but did not remain in their body. Once exited, the back wall is a giant writing tablet for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings on the "Wall of Reflections."

To complete the full vision of the piece, we are asking for some help with funding. Any funds received will be used first towards materials including lumber, lighting, fabric, curtains, batteries and hardware. Once those items are paid for we will use funds for transportation costs to take the project to Black Rock City, the place Burning Man is held annually.  Any remaining funds will be used  to provide food for the artists and crew while building and during installation.

Our hope is that those that have experienced cancer or have had a loved one experience it will be healed, moved and inspired. You are invited to come see the project fully assembled in Allenspark Colorado the weekend of Aug 19th-21st. Cancer Unmasked will be burned on Playa as a symbol of transformation at the end of the week during Burning Man 2022.
