Cancer relief fund for Simon Machnik

Dear friends and family,
I am reaching out to request a donation to help my brother cover his living expenses while he is undergoing cancer treatment for the next 6-12 months.
I’ve never had to confront cancer before, but recently my younger brother of 36 years old, Simon, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-hodgkins lymphoma after many weeks of excruciating pain and fatigue. It’s been an emotionally trying time and a huge learning curve for the whole family. I never realized before this how all-consuming cancer is. There’s the stress of waiting for a diagnosis (terrifying), then the shock and pain of learning it (devastating), then the anxiety of needing to move quickly to get treatment which is no small feat (it requires lots of advocacy and an army of supportive friends and family), and then the relief - finally- of knowing that he is getting the best treatment possible (optimism!).
And now we have to wait patiently and allow for the miracles of modern medicine to take place.
Unfortunately though, focusing on recovery is not the only concern for Simon, and his partner, Pam. In addition to fighting for his life, finances are another stress trigger that they have to deal with. While we’ll have to trust the experts with his treatment, I realize that we can help him heal faster in a very important and impactful way by alleviating some of those financial worries, which is why I have taken it upon myself to ask for your help.
As some of you know, Simon returned to school to study physiotherapy at UBC, and just a few weeks short of finishing his program he had to put everything on hold due to the debilitating pain he was in and seek treatment. Unfortunately this has led him to a precarious situation since he doesn’t qualify for paid sick leave and his savings have all been used up for education. Pam has also had to reduce her work hours so that she can care for him- which we are very grateful for.
If you know Simon like I do, you will agree that he has never asked for anything of anyone. You also know that he is kind and caring and generous, and always keen for a laugh. In fact, even amidst his battle with cancer, his resilience and humour shines through.
Therefore, if you do feel inclined to offer him and Pam your love and support in a very meaningful way that will help a great deal, and give him the peace of mind to just focus on healing, please consider making a contribution- however big or small.
