1st Blackwater Valley B-P Scouts has been running for twenty-six years.
Our scout hut is in dire need of replacement. We have kept it going with regular repairs and DIY weekends but the building is now at the end of its long and very useful life. We have been granted planning permission, a twenty-five year lease, and have an architect (who specialises in charity club houses) managing the project. We have £20k fundraised already, but we need a lot more funds to start work on our new hut that will keep the group going for another twenty-five years and beyond.
Please help us keep this scout group alive and benefiting the local communities.
THE PROJECT
The original building was a temporary construction donated from another project and reassembled on site. The construction is a metal frame suspended on blocks with wooden cladding and a flat roof. The foundation blocks are low grade and crumbling. The floor has failed in several places and been patched. The ceiling has suffered from ingress of water from leaks on the flat roof. It has been significantly replaced over time but is now in poor repair again. Despite several repairs the roof continues to leak, a situation that is exacerbated by pooling as a result of structural sagging. The external cladding is rotting and falling away. As part of our maintenance and in preparation for this re-build the Group funded the installation of a septic tank suitable for a larger building and attached temporary galvanised toilet cubicles donated by the Army to the Hut. Previously the Group had used council toilets in the recreation ground, now closed due to vandalism. The council installed CCTV covering the site and our Hut in 2017. To properly secure the lease area the group funded the purchase of new fencing which leaders, members and families constructed about the new lease boundary. That construction was achieved in a single weekend including removal of the old fence. We have already received planning permission in 2016 but the three years were taken up discharging conditions to that planning permission related to being on the edge of a Land Fill Site. Our planning permission was renewed in December 2019 for a further three years.
THE DIFFERENCE WE MAKE
We are part of the world’s largest mixed youth movement represented in 129 countries. Scouting positively changes the lives of millions of children around the world. I have personally attended and help judge outdoor cooking competitions for Scouts in Wari, Nigeria. As someone working in Nigeria at the time I could see the real difference that the movement was making for those children there; giving them opportunities they would not get otherwise. Our Scout Group donated Scout hats, progress books, and badges to the local groups in Wari, things that they, surprisingly, could not get locally. Scouting helps children and young adults to reach their full potential. Scouts develop skills including teamwork, time management, leadership, initiative, planning, communication, self-motivation, cultural awareness and commitment. We help young people grow in confidence, get jobs, save lives and even change the world. In our association, the Baden Powell Scouts Association, that is achieved through wholly volunteer, unpaid investment of time by everyone involved from the Chief Commissioner at the top down through the National Committee, the Area councils, and the local individual Scout Groups. Every one of those people provides personal time for regular evening meetings, weekend activities, and personal vacation from work to make camps and expeditions happen.
