I have always had a passion for teaching and working with children with Special Needs.  When I moved home to Guam after completing my undergrad studies in 2009, I was eager to continue my work that I fell in love with.  This was when I was introduced to our student's with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families.  For eight years I worked closely with them and learned so much about their amazing talents.  They are the future artists, engineers and community members of our island. Each child that I have had the pleasure of meeting truly holds a special place in my heart.

In 2016 I began seriously thinking about pursuing my Master's degree but remained on the fence about which program to dedicate my time to.

Around the same time I met a family with a young boy with ASD who were looking for behavioral therapists on the island to work with their son.  They were frustrated at the lack of behavioral therapy services considering the research that supports how effective it is for children with ASD.  They began their mission of bringing Applied Behavior Analysis (behavioral therapy) to the island.  Their first mission was to recruit people who wanted to pursue a degree and certification in ABA.  In January 2017, I became their first scholarship recipient to commit to an ABA Master's program.

I truly believe that this work is the most meaningful and fulfilling way to dedicate my time.  I am so thankful to the HunterSpeaks organization for helping me to realize some bigger dreams and be a part of an incredibly inspiring mission.  With their help, we will open the first Autism Center on Guam to offer behavioral therapy to our children with ASD.

Now, in my second semester of school I am ready to begin completing field experience hours working with children with ASD as part of the graduation requirements.  The difficulty comes from not having a certified behavioral therapist on island to supervise my hours.  The alternative option is to hire a supervisor to oversee my field experience from abroad.  The cost of this alternative is substantial but necessary in order to complete my program.  The necessary hours of supervision and cost break-down are as follows:

1500 Field experience hours (mandatory)
1 hour of direct supervision for every 20 field hours

1500/20=75 hours of direct supervision

$65/hour- Direct supervision under certified BCBA

75 hours x $65 = $4875

In order to complete the field hours within my expected graduation date of December 2018, I will need to begin my field experience this coming September 2017.

I am humbly asking for your help in raising the funds to cover the cost of hiring a supervisor to complete these requirements.  Any donation would be greatly appreciated by myself as I pursue my degree and the next step in my career.  Ultimately, your donation will serve the bigger mission of bringing a much needed service to the island of Guam for a population that often goes unrecognized.  Please help to light it up blue in support of Autism Awareness.

Thank you,
Camille
