Matt Layne and I have not shared our story with many, but we want everyone to be able to love on our Cam. We thought we were going to have to teach our kid about the world. Turns out we are going to teach the world about our kid.
We are all born with different challenges and disabilities. Our son, Cam, was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) and a rare chromosomal abnormality. He will have a long road ahead of him developmentally.
I started with this perfect plan of this perfect little family I would have one day. Now, I just wake up and hold on for dear life each morning. I'm just a mom who is doing her best... so before you judge me, walk a mile; no, walk just half a mile in my shoes....because if the wounds on my heart and the bruises on my soul were translated onto my skin, you wouldn't recognize me at all.
As a mother all you want to do is protect your baby. You don't know pain or anxiety or stress or fear until that ability to protect and shelter your son is stripped from your arms and all you can do is pray and watch and wait. Our precious Cam will undergo major open heart surgery at 4 months old and only 9 lbs and will face challenges though out his life I could never imagine. A tough recovery and many hours of therapy are all we really know right now. We have lots of unanswered questions about the future, but we are confident in our team of doctors and specialist. Cam is literally the strongest person ever. Most people go their whole lives without meeting their hero, but I gave birth to mine.
I have faced some of the biggest challenges of my life in the last four months and discovered a strength I never thought I had. Our journey is just beginning, and God has been molding Matt and I into warriors to fight alongside our son.
Through a roller coaster of emotions we discovered how to be a rock for our child. Though we are exhausted, we somehow find a way to keep going. Though we are worried to death, we are full of hope. The two most impatient people in the world, Matt and I, are learning outstanding patience. We are overwhelmed, but we somehow hold it together. And even through the chaos we manage find the funny and the wonderful and the kind.
God is on my side and He is in control. I truly believe that, even if my tone suggests I'm trying to convince myself of the fact.
Matt and I are strong; Cam is stronger. Our support group of family and friends has done things we can never repay and never say thank you enough for. We are truly blessed. We have people praying for us who we have never even met, all across the United States; it is absolutely amazing the love we have felt.
We have our bad days and our tears, but WE ARE RAISING A DAMN GOOD FIGHTER!
