Callie's HLHS Journey

On March 7th, 2018 Kristen and Cameron had a 20 week ultrasound at a high risk OB office due to their current OB having some concerns. During the ultrasound the doctor found some abnormalities with Callie’s heart and she was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect that affects oxygenated blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left ventricle of the heart does not form correctly. This condition needs to be treated once Callie is born.
What does this mean? Callie will be born at Riverside Hospital and after delivery she will receive IV medication through her umbilical cord to keep the oxygenated blood in her body flowing. Shortly after delivery (1-2 hours) she will be transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Provided there are no complications Callie will have a procedure 4-7 days after she is born. During this procedure they will make a small incision in her chest. They will place a stint in her heart where they need a valve to stay open. After she recovers from this she will get to come home!
At 4-6 months Callie will be heading back to Nationwide Children’s for her first open heart surgery. She will then have to have another open heart surgery between the ages of 2-4.
