Caleb Carter's Recovery Fund

My nephew Caleb is 18 years old and a senior at Dawson County High School in Dawsonville, GA. He is the youngest of my sister Suzanne's kids. Caleb loves the outdoors, especially camping and playing on the lake with his kayak. He also loves playing guitar and has an electric and an acoustic at home. He is my mother's first grandson and the only redhead in our family (he gets it from my Granny).

On Saturday, March 23, Caleb suffered a terrible head injury while riding four-wheelers with his friend. He was life-flighted to Grady in Atlanta, and after being told there was nothing that could be done, one doctor decided to take a chance since Caleb is so young. We are all very fortunate that the surgery went as planned and he is still with us. However, after the surgery, the surgeon warned us of the long road ahead.

According to the surgeon, Caleb had shattered his skull as well as bones in his face and suffered damage to his left frontal lobe and eye. He is still in critical condition but is stable. He will be in ICU for a minimum of two months before his next surgery. The surgeons will then implant an artificial skull where the broken part once was, as well as piece back together the broken bones in his face.

Yesterday, he has started to move his right fingers and toes. He also appeared irritated when Suzanne was trying to wipe his eyes, which you'd expect from any teenager, but the nurses say it's a good sign. He still hasn't moved his left fingers or toes.

Caleb has a long road of recovery and physical therapy in front of him. Suzanne, who is his sole supporter, has not left his side since the accident. She has also taken a leave of absence from her job as a nurse until Caleb is out of the hospital and stable.
