We have an outlandish idea in our noggin of loading the basic necessities (with the addition of some handy-dandy modern technology gadgets) to our bicycles and living in the Great South American outdoors. Through our travels we will be doing our best to capture our experience through video, pictures, and words. We have 3 main goals revolved around education:
1. Gain the ability of speaking Spanish fluently.
We have both taken Spanish classes in high school and college, so we can "communicate" in Spanish but we are by no means "fluent." Living in California where 40% of the population speak Spanish, we understand the advantages (in both social and business dynamics) of being able to communicate and converse, en Español. There is no greater teaching program than completely divulging ourselves in the Spanish speaking world. We have to either sink or swim in the Spanish speaking waters...good thing we are good swimmers:)
2. Learn the ways of organic farming.
During our travels we will be visiting and working on organic farms which are affiliated with the organization WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). This amazing organization provides the location of organic farms around THE WORLD and allows members to work on their farms in trade for a place to sleep (and hopefully a bite to eat :D)! We will be performing daily chores such as harvesting, preparing soil for planting, milking, cleaning pens, digging trenches, and fun (as well as difficult) things like that. In return we will learn techniques in organic farming, permaculture, and biodynamics.
3. Breaking off from the First-World commodities and experiencing an organic life adventure.
What is life without Ralphs, Target, Chipotle (yes...we will miss this), Bud Light, Best Buy, McDonalds, Kim Kardashian, American Idol, Ford, Starbucks BLAH BLAH BLAH.....constantly and continuously shoving their advertizements down our throat and burning their logos into our retinas? Honestly, we couldn't tell you. We have been subjected to these first world commodities our entire life, and want to know what life is truly about without corporate America and it's novelties. We want to relearn what it is to live life without material possessions being the number one priority. And secondly, we absolutely LOVE camping, we love the aesthetic and spiritual beauty of nature. We thrive for florescent sunsets and the tear jerking sunrises. We are taking it back to the basics with the goal of showing the world it is possible to live happily with less!
