Jonah Mullins is a 7 year old Down syndrome boy that suffered a stroke Sunday November 19. (A little about Jonah) He is absolutely the pick me up if you’re having a bad day. He is always smiling and has so much love to give. He is truly a ray of sunshine! Jonah is not only loved by his teachers and friends, but he is also loved by his community. His parents, Chad and Lori, are amazing. They speak out on behalf of Down syndrome awareness, and they provide support to any parents who receive the news their child has DS. Not only are Chad and Lori involved with Jonah, they are also involved with Jonah’s 4 brothers. On Sunday, November 19 Chad and Lori couldn’t believe what they were hearing. Sweet Jonah had suffered a stroke. He was flown from Hazard, KY to the University of KY Medical Center where doctors diagnosed him with Moyamoya disease. Moyamoya disease is a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain.
Moyamoya is a progressive disease that does not improve without treatment. While moyamoya itself is not curable, surgery to provide alternative blood flow to the brain prevents the symptoms related to moyamoya and can provide an excellent long term outcome with significant stroke risk reduction. Jonah is facing surgeries, physical therapy, and an extended hospital stay. Chad and Lori will be by his side every step of the way. The medical bills will begin to pile up as well as daily living expenses and by no means do we want them to worry. Their focus is on Jonah.
