My pursuit of a new career has led me to accept an offer for a dream job – Hazardous Waste Technician in Antarctica! I'm heading south in October on my own "Frozen" adventure, and I could use your help in getting ready for my trip.
After a two-and-half-year search for employment, I actually have a job! The feeling is fantastic! I had been laid off from the government subcontractor where I had worked for almost eighteen years and I admit I was pretty depressed. I felt even worse when I was unable to find a job in my old field. So I pulled on my big girl boots, decided to change careers, and I went back to school full-time. Now I'm a freshly minted graduate with two Associate of Science degrees, in Environmental Management and Occupational Health & Safety, both with honors! Within one week of graduation I'd been offered a job that promised great experience, an eye-catching entry on my resume, and maybe a healthy dose of adventure. By international treaty, all waste must be removed from Antarctica to the country of origin. My job will be to make sure that everything that goes into Antarctica comes back out of Antarctica, whether it be trash, recyclables, or hazardous waste. I feel that I'm on the right path!
My family, friends, and professors are enthusiastic and supportive of my new adventure, but now I need the financial support to make the leap and get me "on the Ice" (that's what they call it!). My resources have been stretched to the limit to allow me to complete my retraining, so available funds are tight and make it difficult to afford to buy the required items without help. While the job doesn't pay that great, it is the adventure of a lifetime! Starting a new career, living on the most exotic continent on the planet, and supporting science! It doesn't get much better than that! I have been cleared to work in Antarctica...now all I have to do is get there!
Now, for some new jobs, you only have to buy a new suit of clothes or maybe a new lunch box. But going to the bottom of the world for six months takes a bit more gear. This Southern California girl doesn't own a whole lot of clothes that are a good for cold weather. So, I have to procure six months’ worth of essentials before I leave. Things like glacier sunglasses, prescription medications, continent-appropriate clothes (not a lot of need for long underwear in San Diego), and even a prepaid phone card so I can call home, are just a few of the items I need before I leave.
My first big adventure on my new path awaits me, and with your help, I can make it a success!
