Hello,
Our beloved daughter, Esther Koepnick, has been diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Due to the location of the tumor in her left foot and a biopsy, she has been on crutches since June 3, 2014. She has resigned from her full time job, because walking is difficult and sometimes painful.
Esther is 18 years old. In September 2014, she had planned to attend Rosebud School of the Arts, a theatre school in Alberta, where she could further develop her passion and ability for the performing arts, including dance. Esther’s realization of this potential has now been delayed a year as a result of this current situation. Everyone who knows Esther loves her sense of humor, honesty, and heart for truth and beauty. She is an active relational person who expresses herself through words, songs, and dance.
There will be a surgery to have the tumor removed and radiation beforehand in order to shrink it. In addition to radiation, Esther is undergoing naturopathic treatments to help strengthen her body systems to fight the cancer, minimize the side effects of the radiation, and further shrink the tumor. This could save more of the muscles, nerves, and tissue in her foot, including the arch. The treatment and recovery process will take a minimum of 6 months, and will include a period of time when Esther will be confined to a wheelchair.
