Quin needs a kidney transplant. Both siblings are viable donor matches, but he needs $15,000 saved before he can be on the list for the surgery.
My brother was diagnosed with kidney failure three years ago instantaneously placing him on dialysis. At age 32 he is the youngest person receiving treatment at his facility.
As a young child he was diagnosed with Kidney Disease, the only person in our family. We knew it was only a matter of time, but at age 32 he is still relatively young to be told his kidneys no longer function.
After he was diagnosed with kidney failure he lost everything. Anyone that has had kidney failure knows that it leaves you exhausted. You feel sick most days; the heat is unbearable. You have a permanent stent in your arm. For the first year he started an at home dialysis - not knowing how it really worked. It would take upwards to 12 hours to complete. For 12 hours a day he would sit in a chair and clean the liquids out of his body. At the time he was finishing up his Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. With the time dedicated to dialysis, he was no longer able to attend school. (His student loans are still trying to collect.) He lost his job because it was through the school with the stipulation you had to be enrolled. He lost his apartment because he had no money to pay for it. Most of his belongings were sold off. He has been fortunate enough that his family has taken him in, but that is not how a 32 year old should have to live.
My brother is a huge heart. He will give his coat off his back for anyone. Everyone close to him knows that in a pinch he will help them out. He has helped countless friends move many times and friends of his friends. He is always accountable to my family. When I need him, he is the child care provider to my children. They adore their uncle.
As his sister, it is hard for me to watch as he suffers. He does not complain. He takes his three trips to dialysis a week, sitting for four hours. He has been missing out on life. While his friends are going to concerts, events, getting married, having kids, he is sitting in dialysis.
Once he receives a transplant, he can begin to get back to normal life; finish school, get a job and live life again.
Little did I realize you need to have $15,000 in the bank as part of the process to be put on the list. This is to help pay for the procedure to ensure that he will be able to afford all the medication needed so his body does not reject the new kidney.
