Dr. Bill Crain, who is a College Professor is the most compassionate, hard working noble man I’ve ever met. He and his lovely wife of 50 years founded a non profit organization, East Hampton Group for Wildlife to protect all living kind. They also made an Animal Sanctuary to save domestic animals in Duchess County, N.Y. Since I met the group for Wildlife 3 years ago, I have been fighting to save Deer in East Hampton with them. I have a lot of respect for Bill and Ellen for their tireless efforts, love and dedication to protect voiceless, innocent and beautiful animals. We need more people like them in this world.
At the end of 2017, I was stunned to learn about Bill’s arrest and sentencing to jail for 15 days for protesting the hunt that have killed over 4,000 Black Bears in N.J within the last 14 years!
He is not a young man who can tolerate the jail time in this cold weather. He was also fined $2,691.
Below is the statement which Bill read in Court prior to sentencing;
On October 14, I walked out of an area designated for bear hunt protestors, refused to return, and was arrested. It was a peaceful act of civil disobedience.
Civil disobedience owes much to the thinking of Martin Luther King, Jr. According to King, laws and government practices should be rooted in higher principles, especially principles of justice. But some laws and practices have violated the principle of justice, as when segregation stifled the opportunities of Black people to develop their human potentials. King felt a moral obligation to peacefully disobey those laws and practices.
Traditionally, the principles at stake in acts of civil disobedience have involved humans’ justice toward other humans. But our society is gradually realizing its obligation to be stewards of the natural environment and other animal species. A new ethical principle is emerging—our obligation to protect and respect all forms of life. This principle isn’t written into our country’s founding documents, but it is gaining strength in the world.
When New Jersey carried out its black bear hunts, it completely disregarded its responsibility to respect and protect other living beings. It carried out a cruel slaughter of them. Between 2003 and 2017, the state promoted hunts that killed over 4,000 bears. My act of civil disobedience was meant to demonstrate my refusal to go along with the authorities promoting this slaughter. I hope it drew attention to how seriously I take the murder of other animals to be.

As Bill said in the statement, he chose to get arrested to draw attention on this horrible killing. He is sacrificing himself for Black Bears. When friends of the group for Wildlife and myself asked him how we can help him, he told us that the best thing to do is to keep on doing what we are doing. Keep doing all we can to defend the deer and wildlife in the Hamptons. We need to gather our strength to fight a cull by the Village of East Hampton. He also asked us to raise legal effort fee of $4,000.
To show our respect for Bill’s courage and efforts to protect Wildlife, friends of the group for Wildlife and I’d like to raise for his fine of $2,691 for the arrest and also to cover for the legal fee of $4,000 to stop culling in the village.
I set my goal for $7,000. Please help us and donate what you can. Any amount will be appreciated.
I dream for we all will live with Wildlife in Harmony.
