I've spent the last year serving middle school youth in the Dover Housing Authority community at my host site, the Seymour Osman Community Center.
Every day during the school year, 10-15 middle schoolers come to the SOCC for our afterschool program. These kids rely on our desktop and laptop computers to do their homework, unwind playing their favorite games, and participate in enrichment activities like learning coding and game design. However, our computer lab has proved progressively less reliable. Though we have upgraded a few pieces in recent years, sweeping change is needed. Our equipment is old, slow, and often doesn't work at all.
You can help! We want to raise $2,500 for five new desktop units. These computers would mean a reliable way for kids to complete assignments, which are revolving more and more around access to computers and the internet. It would allow us to provide enrichment opportunities that teach technology skills and computer science, which youth are rapidly being encouraged to engage in.
These computers would also be a resource for the larger Dover Housing Authority community. DHA residents use our computers to fill out job applications and apply for college scholarships. A recent study shows that 60% of families in the area lack access to computers and dependable internet service.
We need new computers, and they simply are not in the budget. Grants take months to years to complete, and a new school year is right around the corner. Together, your small donations can help us achieve our goal before my term is done and the new school year starts! Let's get these kids some computers and close the digital divide!
