Science Education in Buxton Guyana

Donation protected
Professor Wilbert Hope took a sabbatical from his job as Chairman of the Chemistry and Environmental Science Department of Medgar Evers College, CUNY to spend  time in his native Guyana working on the environmental projects that target the issues of irrigation and drainage in local villages. This project will attempt to implement one of the main recommendations that came out of the Dutch Risk Reduction (DRR) study in Guyana.

The overarching goal of this project is to improve the quality of life of people by engaging the community as whole in environmental improvement activities appropriate for  flood prone areas. Partnered with Buxton’s Secondary School these funds are to buy equipment for the participating students. The funds will help support practical and community oriented science education. Our goal is to raise US$5000.00

The newly formed Environmental Science Club presently consists of eight students. Their first assignment is to take a trip to explore the  perimeter of the village and explore its “backdam” trenches and canals. To ensure a successful expedition the students  need long protective boots, safety suits, gloves, cutlasses, rakes etc. Help us to take first step to community awareness and practical solutions that will serve as a demonstration unit for similar communities in Guyana.
