Brigadoon's Mission

We provide service dogs for veterans, other adults, and children with physical, developmental, and behavioral health disabilities, to promote a more independent and enriched life.  We change lives one partnership at a time by "Offering a Helping Paw"!

Brigadoon's Accomplishment

Since our establishment in August of 2004, we have placed over 100 service dogs and have established youth programs in a local high school and an alternative school for at-risk youth.

We have also started a program for veterans, as well as a prison programs at Cedar Creek Correctional Center in Little Rock, WA; Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, WA; Stafford Creek Correctional Center in Aberdeen, WA; and Coyote Ridge Corrections Center in Connell, WA. The dogs live with and are trained by the inmates!

In 2012 we received our accreditation with Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and were recognized by the State Senate receiving Resolution #8688.  As founder of Brigadoon Service Dogs, Denise Costanten received The Golden Tennis Shoe Award, presented by U.S. Senator Patty Murray; Volunteer of the Year Award from the Washington State Department of Corrections, presented by Governor Inslee; and Volunteer of the Year Award from The Whatcom County Peace Builders.

We’ve trained dogs for children and adults with a variety of disabilities such as hearing or visual impairments, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, other mental health diagnoses and people with medical conditions requiring dogs trained to alert to an impending crisis.

Brigadoon is one of the few training facilities that trains dogs for children under the age of 16. We train with the child and their entire family to ensure the service dog is a good fit in the home.

Brigadoon's veteran program, Canines and Heroes for Independence, is geared specifically towards the complex needs of veterans who may suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and/or mobility issues. The service dog for a combat veteran might be trained to turn on lights, retrieve items, wake their human partner during a nightmare, aide the hearing impaired, or calm a wounded warrior when suffering from a flashback or panic attack.

Brigadoon has also partnered with a number of Washington state prisons to create a mutually beneficial program. Our dogs are housed with the inmates who are responsible for all aspects of their care and training, under the supervision of a Brigadoon trainer. Learning to communicate in a positive, more effective way carries over into the inmates' interactions within the prison system, with family members, and coping once they are released.

Brigadoon also participates in a "Reading" program which is similar to the local Reading With Rover program that Hank (Kelly Weyer's) dog was a member of.

Donations will help fund the cost of training a service dog, a 2 year process.

Please check out Brigadoon's website for more detailed information.  Note, all donations will be sent directly to Brigadoon.
