Burning Man 2022: The Last Bet Motel

The Last Bet Motel is, at this time, only a dream, a render, a schematic, and a website. But, when constructed for the first time at Black Rock City this year, it will become a monument to the destructive wave of gentrification that Reno and many other cities are experiencing. We humbly ask for your assistance in helping us arrive on the playa this year. These initial donations will cover materials that will be reused for years to come.
The Last Bet Motel represents the torn-down low-income housing motels in Reno, Nevada. A tall sign holds the letters "Don't Be Crasy" illuminating the playa at night, which is an homage to Reno's "Best Bet Motel," whose marquee used to hold the same words before it was demolished. The motel will have four rooms with half walls which can be interacted with by participants. There will be furniture in each room, and mannequins that can be moved around. Surrounding the motel, chrome mannequins stand with tools ready to tear down the motel despite the residents still living inside.
At our art support camp there will be a hotel desk inviting participants to check in and be given a "room key," which will invite participation on playa and in the city. Additionally, our camp will hold a donation bin for non-perishable foods, toiletries, and hygiene products to support the community in Reno experiencing homelessness.
For generous donors who donate $500 or more, you will receive a commemorative hotel key, which will unlock a secret easter egg in the last motel room on playa.
The funds will go towards materials (lumber, tube steel, steel plates, earth anchors, hardware), tools, light fixtures, ballasts, fuel for lighting, interior materials (furniture, mannequins, decor, spray paint), transportation costs, and ticket/travel reimbursement for our team members.
ALL FUNDS RAISED OVER OUR GOAL WILL BE DONATED to Karma Box, a local community initiative that allows people to give non-perishable food, hygiene products, toiletries, and other useful items to those in need.
