Bunk Bus for Standing Rock

The generosity of hundreds of donors and volunteers has brought the Bunk Bus to within a few days of completion.  Just two weeks ago, on October 31, we took delivery of a 20 year old school bus.  Since then dozens of vounteers have worked long hours to convert it into a rudimentary clinic.  (Very basic!  Think: MASH.)  There are 10 built-in bunks and just enough open area for a table and some chairs.  There's storage space for medical supplies.  We've installed insulation, a high-capacity propane heater and an electrical system (solar panel, generator and a huge bank of batteries).  People will have a warm, dry place to take shelter from the severe North Dakota winter.  The murals painted on the sides of the bus are the work of Native American artists: Shawn Hudson, Clay River and Jesus Hernandez.  They carry a message of support from the Northwest to the Indigenous Water Protectors of the plains who are resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Only, recently, we learned of the urgent need for a shower facility at Standing Rock.  People who are injured with pepper spray need to  wash off the toxic chemical irritant quickly and thoroughly.  It wasn't possible to work a shower into the bunk bus plan.  But, we want to respond to this request.  We'll ask what the people at the Camp think will work best when we deliver the bus a few days from now.  Our initial concept calls for a stout wall tent outfitted with a space and water heaters and one or more shower stalls.  Think about taking a shower while camping on the open plain in the middle of winter!
