Last night there was a bombing in Karada, Iraq. A car was detonated close to an area with a lot of shops, some of them selling ice-cream. There were 17 deaths in total. Injuries are unconfirmed.
One of those killed was my cousin, Zynab. An innocent, fun-loving 12 year- old who had just gone to buy ice cream after Iftar. She never got to finish it.
Zynab went to visit her sick grandfather with her parents. All she wanted after a long day of fasting was to have some ice cream. She had amazing dreams of finishing high school and becoming a teacher. She had so much life left within her. She was a beacon of light that touched anyone that would cross paths with her. She was a free-spirited and adventurous girl who enjoyed joking and dancing with her cousins, with us.
Iraq, among other nations, has had no rest. Last year it was during Eid. This year, in the beginning of Ramadan. It’s callous. It’s disgusting. We’ve been rendered immune to these killings. They have become common fold within our society, and we are doing little to change the atrocities committed against our people.
Zynab's martyrdom is a call for this change. Her death has destroyed the barrier that labeled Muslims solely as perpetrators in this situation. We are all victims.
This page has been set up by friends and family of Zynab to raise fund to build a well in her name and in honour of all the victims of Karrada Bombing on the 30th of May, 2017.
May Allah place the martyrs among those who reside in the highest level of Jannah. May Allah expand their graves and fill them with his light and the fragrance of Jannah. Allahuma Ameen.
