Build a Home in Haiti, Not Stopping

My son, Miguel Billings, a 10 Year Old 4th Grader at Good Shepherd Lutheran School in Collinsville, IL, came home from school with an idea to raise money for Haiti. At first he said "I have an idea of practicing my Baritone so I can raise money for Haiti." As a practical mother, I replied "Playing your Baritone is not going to make money appear." He then got a look of complete disappointment and immediately began to cry. Pushing through his tears, he softly whispered "Can I at least try?" I knew there had to be more to it, so I questioned him further. I asked him how he thought he was going to raise money and he responded that he wanted to play his Baritone in the front yard on the sidewalk to see if he could raise money for Haiti. I saw the passion in his eyes, and knew that God was working in his heart, so I said "Yes."
He stayed up late into the night practicing until we made him stop. My 5 and 8 year old baked about 200 cookies. The morning came and he woke up at 6am ready to go. His school band teacher, Zach Stegman, saw an email I sent of the event and came to our house at 8am in the morning to do a special practice with him. My son has only been playing the Baritone for less than three months, but he was learning new songs left and right and pushing himself to the max.
It was now 9am. We setup a cookie table, put some signs up, and then he started playing his Baritone outside at 10am. He played until 5pm with a few breaks in between songs and 10 minutes to eat lunch. He then proceeded to play his Baritone outside the next day (Sunday) for another four hours. Followed by an average of 2-3 hours each day after school. He even stayed in for recess to finish his homework at school to ensure he could be outside to play his Baritone to raise money. He would sit and play for three hours straight and only receive a few dollars, and he was still extremely grateful. He has played outside almost every day. He has played when it's cold outside, he has played in the rain, and he has played in the dark begging to play even longer. As of 11/19, he is up to 36+ hours playing outside and has no intentions of stopping until he meets his goal.
His goal is to build a two bedroom house in Haiti. We chose a trusted Christian organization that has been in Haiti for several decades called Lifeline Christian Mission.
For $4775 a Haitian family will be provided with the following:
Basic home details:
2-room 12'x24' cement block home, which is constructed by Lifeline's mission teams and Haitian nationals. The family who is receiving the house supplies the land.
To note: all of the homes built by Lifeline stood firm during the 2010 7.0 magnitude earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks!
Haiti's infrastructure is completely destroyed. They have very limited resources, no clean water, little to no shelter, very little food, sickness and disease, and it seems the world has forgotten about Haiti and moved on.
My son asks and challenges you to help. He says he will not give up until he meets his goal. One day he told me "Mom, it's not just one house! We have to rebuild all of the streets, the buildings, and everyone's homes." I have full confidence in him that he will make his goal and beyond. May God be glorified in all things and please keep the people of Haiti in your prayers.
