In March 2012, my dear friend, Brian Curtin received the news no one wants to hear, stage IV rectal cancer. From diagnosis to beginning of treatment 10 days passed. Up to this point, Brian was working 48 hours a week for Roche Bros supermarket. He continued to work through daily radiation and while wearing a chemotherapy pump which administered the drugs 24/7, he was able to work until his first surgery. After his initial radiation/chemo, he underwent a severe surgery which removed the tumor, the size of an egg. He had a ileostomy bag for several months and switched to a more aggressive chemotherapy treatment. In October of 2012, he had reversal surgery for the ileostomy and continued treatment until January of 2013. In April 2013, Brian was given a clean bill of health and he went back to work.
In May 2014, Brian received the devastating news that he had metastatic rectal cancer that had spread to both lungs. Doctors told him it was inoperable. They started him on an aggressive chemotherapy protocol which has put Brian through hell. Ten weeks or so into his treatment he began to experience tremendous pain in his rectun that prevented him from getting around. He was in bed pretty much 24/7. Doctors scheduled a CT scan and found that he had infection and ulcers that needed to be removed. Doctors scheduled surgery on November 12th which kept him in the hospital for a week and sent him home with a permanent ostomy.
He has now returned to his chemo treatment routine to battle his second Cancer. The ostomy has weighed hard on him but he is now able to get around a little and doesn't waste away in bed.
During his first battle with cancer, Brian worked as long as he was able to relying on his small income from short term disability and his wife's income. Brian has again been forced to go out on disability, this time with the added stress that they are still paying bills from his last fight with cancer.
Most people don't think about the financial strain a cancer diagnosis brings, the substantial bills coupled with the loss of income. It's an additional stress on top of the crushing stress being worried about your loved one.
Brian needs to focus on fighting cancer. That has to be his primary focus now, he's fighting for his life. Brian is kind, hard working, a great father to his son, Brendan, who has Autism. Brian would never ask for anything himself so that is where WE all come in. We can all step up and help him by donating to help him cover his medical expenses. Let's help Brian fight and beat this cancer. Any support you can give would be greatly appreciated by the family.
