Holli and Ralph were married in February 2014. Holli has Lupus, an autoimmune disease, and it was finally under control for her to be cleared to have a baby!
Holli's pregnancy went well, and she was monitored very closely with ultrasounds, lab work and doctors visits to watch for possible health issues that Brixton, their son, could have such as Fetal Heart Block. Everything was going as planned until in her 6th month of pregnancy, at 26 weeks and 2 days, her water broke. She went immediately to the emergency room. She was transferred over to a more prominate hospital, as they were better equipped to handle the baby's care, should he be born this early.
Holli spent 9 days in the hospital going beween the Maternal Special Care Unit and Labor and Delivery. She was under constant monitoring, as she would go into labor, and all at once, the labor would cease. On December 11th, Holli went into labor and gave birth to baby Brixton Reece the following day, December 12th. He was 2lbs. 6.5 ounces. Holli and Ralph were able to see Brixton briefly before he was whisked away to be specially cared for in the hospital's NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). CPAP, vapotherm, and nasal cannula were different stages of oxygen needed to help the baby breathe. He needed a feeding tube as he was too little to nurse and could not drink from a bottle. He needed eye exams to test for any signs of prematurity of retinothopy which could lead to blindness if he was not monitored closely. Bloodwork was also needed frequently to monitor his blood count and blood sugar, among other things. He needed IV fluids and antibiotics. He had to have a PICC Line inserted from a vein in his arm all the way to an artery near his heart, since the IV's do not last more than a couple of days. The PICC line served as a more long term solution. Brixton had a small hemorrhage on the brain, but they are hoping this will not cause any long term challenges for him. Brixton continued to get stronger and stronger, and he is now 2 months old! God has answered many prayers, and Brixton is a strong baby boy. As of now, it is unknown how his prematurity will affect his future health and development.
However, Brixton has spent 2 months in the NICU. Holli and Ralph have been at the hospital every day during this time. Ralph has worked during the day and traveled to the hospital in the evenings. On his two days off a week, he is working a part-time job to try and keep up with the bills that are piling up every day. Holli has been at the hospital everyday, trying to be as hands on as possible, plus taking care of things at home with their other 2 children and their pups to care for.
As you know, a short hospital stay is expensive. Medical costs have become astronomical. Although insurance has covered some of the bill, thus far, it has left them with a current balance of $12,000.00.
Holli is unfortunately unable to go back to work, due to a lupus flare, which is caused from the stress of the pregnancy, and also the stress from the last 2 months and their baby being in Intenesive Care. During her pregnancy, her immune system was supressed. Now, however, her immune system is getting stronger, and with lupus, it is basically fighting against itself, and has pushed her flare further.
Now with baby at home, and Mom unable to go back to work because of her health issue, bills are starting to accumulate.
Brixton is unable to go to daycare because he is a preemie, and he is to have limited contact with children, because of his immune system. So, as you can imagine, the medical bills are starting to arrive, for both Holli's care during her pregnancy, her emergency room visit, her ambulatory transfer over to the hospital, her 9-day stay at the hospital, and Brixton's 2 month stay in the NICU. Although Ralph and Holli are trying their best to keep up on everything, with Holli's being unable to return to work and Brixton's constant supervised care, it is a bit overwhelming, to say the least.
We have posted on "Go Fund Me" because it is a safe and honest way for people to donate money for those with circumstances beyond their control. The hope with this fund, is that Ralph and Holli can concentrate on their family and not have to worry about their surmountable medicals bills.
