Brooklyn Unites for SUNY Downstate: Meals + Masks

Donation protected
It is hard to sit on the sidelines when our friends and family are working tirelessly to serve in our healthcare systems.  Our doctors, nurses, and hospital staff need our support now.  We are near the apex of the COVID-19 pandemic and NYC remains the epicenter of the coronavirus.  SUNY Downstate heroes recently answered Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s directive and became a COVID-19 only facility.  We can help by uniting as a community to support our already overwhelmed and underprotected front line workers with meals, and masks to keep them healthy and safe.  Brooklyn Unites will work with small businesses and local restaurants to deliver meals to the hospital so we can show our immense appreciation for our heroes.

Our Story

After hearing from several friends, clients, and colleagues on the front lines that they have been working 12 hour shifts, often without water, and reusing the same masks for over a week, we decided we had to take action.  A few text message exchanges and an informative phone call later, Brooklyn Unites was born over one weekend between concerned Brooklynites as an initiative to bridge the gap between those of us who are tired of feeling helpless and those who have been tirelessly helping COVID-19 patients.

Our Goal

We aim to support the overwhelming needs of the hospitals in Brooklyn.  Immediately, our priority will be SUNY Downstate (University Hospital of Brooklyn), which is now exclusively a designated COVID-19 hospital, and Kings County Hospital both located in Flatbush, Brooklyn, along with SUNY Bay Ridge.  Each shift has over 500 essential employees who sacrificially go to work every day.  Meals cost around $6-$10 per person and we're looking to source meals from local restaurants as much as possible .  We also aim to provide crucial PPEs to protect the healthcare workers as they're working hard to save lives.

Your Role

Any contribution amount, donations of PPEs, words of gratitude, or sharing the campaign with others can be a big help to our Brooklyn front line heroes as they're working hard to save lives.  Please join our Facebook group to stay updated and share encouraging messages or photos of handmade art for the front line heroes to keep their spirits up.
