Thank you for taking the time to click on this site. Our story is long, but we hope you take the time to read it. Right now, our goal for this site is to help Brittney and her family with home, vehicle, and other bills so that they may focus on her healing. We love you all.
On Friday, February 9th, Brittney was a passenger in an ATV accident. While the initial thought was a concussion alongside some bumps and bruises, Brittney’s cognitive functions quickly declined in a matter of days. She was admitted to the hospital on February 15th and was diagnosed with a concussion that progressed into severe post-concussion syndrome resulting in a traumatic brain injury (TBI). She was also diagnosed with three level cervical disk protrusions which causes her occipital nerve to not function correctly. The right side parietal lobe took the most impact which was a large factor in the TBI and is also what is behind the daily finding of new problems. That also is what causes the delay in motor planning to her left side.
The daily discovery of new issues is due to the neurons in the brain tearing which causes the axons to break and release toxins that kill even more neurons. As this occurs, more toxins are released within the brain which causes more problems. In laymen’s terms, think of it as an injury that produces a bruise. The bruise may not appear right away, however, once it does it gets worse before it can get better. The damage has manifested in many different ways that are common to TBI. Brittney has experienced headaches, vision and balance problems, altered moods/behaviors, problems with memory, thinking, and sleeping, and the onset of anxiety/anxiety attacks and depression. She has also struggled with short term memory loss/amnesia, uncontrollable tremors from her overstimulated brain, and inability to eat most solid foods.
She remained in the hospital for several days and was released with orders to begin intensive neurological rehabilitation for educational, physical, speech, psychiatric, cognitive, and occupational therapies 5 hours every weekday for minimum the next 6 months. This rehab center is located in Fort Worth, about a 100 mile round trip drive every day.
Also during this time Brittney has had to go to several doctor appointments for other issues stemming from the accident, including most recently the optometrist, who explained that the brain injury she sustained is impinging on her occipital lobe. This is causing double vision, blurred vision, and lack of convergence for her eyes. We have found out that has been a key factor behind several anxiety attacks and constant occipital migraines. She has purchased specialized glasses with prisms that redirect light to hopefully help her have single vision rather than double. We are anxiously waiting for those to arrive.
Now, at 40 days since the accident, Brittney has not been able to work, drive, eat normally, see correctly, or have her children in her home for more than 30 minutes at a time. She cannot go to public places outside of rehab, use her phone by herself, watch television, or use a computer. She has lost her job, driver’s license, and nearly all independence. She is not allowed to be left alone, has frequent debilitating panic attacks, and still struggles with the short term memory loss.
Family and friends have gone above and beyond in childcare, day-to-day assistance, food, and much more. It has been requested by Brittney’s rehab center for her to have 24/7 care. One of Brittney’s sisters has been asked to move in to help with that task. Within the last four days, Hunter has been able to come home with some limitations. With Brittney’s sister moving in soon, we are hopeful to be able to transition Chloe into coming home as well. She has not been home overnight once in the past 40 days, or spent more than 30 minutes at home at a time. This, along with Hunter’s absence and limitations, have been Brittney’s hardest struggle. As you can imagine, the separation and changes have also taken a toll on the kids.
With the inability to work, we have come to the point in her healing process that we are finding we need more help. Due to the small-business company Brittney worked for, she was not offered the ability to enroll any disability, FMLA, and, in order to have insurance, she had to obtain it through her husband’s job. While we have looked into several loan deference programs, we are running into problems of Brittney and Greg not qualifying for them. Their vehicles are new, so there is not available assistance for that. Getting rid of a vehicle is not an option as Greg must go to work and someone must drive Brittney’s car to and from rehab every day. The mortgage loan company has stated they do not offer deference unless you are 6 months or more behind on the payments, which would result in foreclosure. They said the other option was to get a loan modification, however, since Brittney is now unemployed, they wouldn’t qualify.
It is for this reason we are creating a GoFundMe account and really sharing every aspect of what we have tried to manage within the family at Brittney’s request. If you know Brittney, you know she is not one to ask for help, she is the one to give it. However, we have come to the point where we really need the help. Many of you have asked what you can do, and well, this truly is it. The monetary needs for this family is great, and far beyond what her family is able to provide alone. We are hoping that we may relieve some of the stresses and pressures of bills so that Brittney can focus on her healing.
Brittney’s faith has not faltered throughout this entire journey, in fact, it has gotten stronger. It has brought her family and friends closer, and has allowed her “to really and truly see the power and love of faith, family, and friends.”
