On November 10th, my father Stephen Greenfield went in for a simple shoulder replacement surgery and came out unable to speak or move. After 3 hours of not waking up from the recovery my mother questioned the medical staff and they informed her he had most likely experienced a stroke. The Hospital continuously reassured us the surgery had been a success however, after receiving all of his paperwork we realized my dad was hypotensive for quite a while and the surgeon was unaware about the severity of the situation. It was decided my father had suffered a brain injury due to the amount of time his brain was deprived of oxygen. After almost a week in ICU my father was transferred to West Florida Rehabilitation center where he continuously worked with speech, occupation and physical therapists. During this time my mother stayed with him every night and day rarely going home or working. My father has improved so very much from that first day he woke up with his eyes rolling around in his bed but he still has very little speech, trouble processing every move he makes and limited movement on his right side because of the Traumatic brain injury. My mom continues to work a very demanding job, taking care of their home and our 5 pets. On top of this she gets my dad to therapy when I can not, assists him with regaining his speech and psychical fitness and helps him with his daily living activities such as eating, bathing, ext. She has taken on all of the bills since my dad is no longer working and somehow continues to take him out and enjoy life while making sure he gets all of the medical attention he needs. We have found a facility almost an hour and a half away in Destin, Fl that offers Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room where the air pressure is pressurized three times higher than normal air pressure. This doctor has worked with several TBI patients like my father and seen success. We are hoping to see his speech come back after 15-30 treatments. Each treatment is $350 and he will need to visit the facility for at least 20 consecutive days. The treatments alone will cost at least $7000 not counting the gas we spend and the work my mother will miss. I am hoping to raise $3,000 by the time his treatments are complete since our insure company will not cover it. My mother is always thinking of others and has rarely let her head down during this time, she is always thinking about how she can do better for my dad and myself. We are in a lawsuit with the hospital and anesthesiologist but the attorney says it could be years before anything happens so your help would be greatly appreciated. I am also trying to make this a surprise because i know my mother is not one to ask for help. Thank you and please share our story!
