Bring Piper Home - Surgery&Recovery

Donation protected
Update March, 2018: Piper's recovery has been incredible. Thanks to every single person who supported her journey she is running and playing like a young pup should again! The surgeon was impressed by her 6-week follow up visit and xrays, her fractured have healed and she can expect to lead a normal life. Piper's foster mom, Meghan, realized there was no way she could imagine life without Piper and the adoption was finalized just a short while ago. A truly happy ending for all!

Update: Piper’s medical expenses now slightly exceed $11,000. We owe a huge thanks to an AMAZING anonymous donor who contacted the vet directly and contributed $3,000 towards her bill and the wonderful surgeon who gave the rescue a $2,000 discount. Every little bit helps- thank you all so much, Piper feels the love! ❤️

You can read Pipers original story below:

Piper’s story is a sad one, but one with hope. She found herself in a Miami-Dade shelter at the tender age of 8 months old. She was pulled from the shelter by wonderful volunteer Harryette and brought into the Southeast German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue ‌where she was then fostered by Meghan in Malabar.

She quickly worked her way into the hearts of everyone she met- she learned what it was like to live in a house and be loved. She learned how to sit, stay, and lay down, she discovered a great love for soft beds:

Then, every pet-owners worst nightmare happened.

Piper slipped out the gate Tuesday evening, Dec 12.  She was hit by a car less than 1 mile from home and managed to hide in the woods. That area was searched relentlessly and she was finally found by a close family friend on Dec 16 after four long days of searching. She was less than 50’ from the road but could not be seen in the dense brush.  It’s a miracle she was found.

Our amazing vet, Dr. Martha Kehoe of  Kehoe Animal Clinic ‌ saw her immediately after being found. She was alert and giving kisses and wagging her tail despite being in pain.

it was discovered that she has a severely broken pelvis. She will require surgery and is going to see the surgeon ASAP on Monday.

Piper is is currently under the care of the Southeast German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue - her medical bills are expected to exceed $5,000.

Her condition is currently stable. She is a 9 month old puppy- the prognosis is quite good - she can expect a long and full life with little to no limitations.

Meghan and Piper before the accident:

Any effort helps. Every dollar, like, and share matter. We want to get Piper her necessary surgery and bring her home for the holidays so she can recover and get back to being the world’s sweetest pupper.

Any and all excess funds will go to the rescue to assist other pets in need

Post surgery update: After a very long and difficult surgery Piper’s surgeon was pleased with the results. They managed to repair her pelvis and hernia, and unfortunately they discovered that Piper’s left kidney had come completely detached so she lost a kidney as well. Her post op bloodwork was very good- and her remaining kidney seems to be doing its job! Here is a photo of the surgeon’s amazing work.
