On June 21st, Nolan was riding home with friends in the bed of a truck enjoying the Summer Solstice sunrise. At speeds double the residential limit the driver hit a dip in the road, ejecting Nolan from the truck bed. His four friends walked away from the accident.
Nolan suffered serious injuries, including two broken femurs, a broken wrist, extensive road rash, and severe brain damage. He underwent several surgeries and spent six days fighting, unsuccessfully, to regain consciousness. On June 27, 2020, his immediate family made the heart-wrenching decision to remove life support and let him peacefully go. Nolan was twenty-three years old.
Nolan’s life was a monument to love, light, acceptance, exploration, peace, and joy. He made friends easily, was a voracious learner, and enjoyed an array of music. From early childhood he had a keen entrepreneurial mindset that developed into boldly tackling many business ventures. In 2019 he completed a two-year foreign exchange trading program and had a promising career ahead of him.
Nolan’s spontaneity and adventurous spirit were infectious. In spring of last year he wrote, “Travel is my education, people are my teachers and this is where I thrive.” He was lionhearted, mischievous, and energetic, often wrestling and playing games with family and friends.
Nolan fed his spirit with love from the Earth and its creatures. He regularly practiced meditation and yoga, and believed in the power of leading by example. He taught us all to live in the Now, the only moment we really have.
This tragedy has confronted our family with an immediate financial challenge. Along with the extra expense of bringing Nolan’s body home, where he can lay at rest near his family, we wish to honor him with a Celebration of Life on August 1, 2020. Monetary contributions will be used towards the following expenses: body transportation from Colorado to Southern Utah, funeral services, and travel and lodging for immediate family members. Nolan’s brother, Evan, will conduct final expenses.
Additionally, six auto accidents have occurred at the same location of Nolan’s accident. Nolan’s family intends to lead a neighborhood petition to the City of Colorado Springs, Colorado for road improvements to be made in hopes of preventing future fatalities. They also intend to erect a memorial at the accident site in honor of Nolan. Any funds raised in excess of the goal amount will be used toward this.
