Who am I? I am Brielle Newman, and I am a girl from an ordinary town with extraordinary dreams!  I will be leaving this July to spend a semester in Costa Rica with AFS Intercultural Programs. I am a Sophomore at Stewart County High School where I spend my days working hard and planning for the future. I absolutely love reading, I also enjoy crafts and making things. I journal, do calligraphy, write poems, embroider, and paint amongst many other things.  Baking and cooking is another passion of mine. I love the beach and the mountains, and anywhere else in nature you could put me. I also have a large and loving family that spends a lot of time together. Some activities we enjoy are family hikes, movie night, board game night, cooking, basketball, and going to the lake. I have very high expectations for myself and have been a straight-A student my whole life. I have a 4.0 GPA and consider myself a very hard worker. I was Freshman Class President and am now Sophomore Class President. I am a member of our local FCCLA chapter and BEARS team. I also enjoy sports and being athletic! I played softball, basketball, and soccer. I have ran cross country for 4 years and have recently started recreational volleyball. I like to feel involved in the community around me and connected with people!

Why do I want to go Abroad? There is a multitude of reasons why I want to go abroad, and I believe the real question is why not. Other countries have different ways of teaching and learning, so experiencing that will make me an even better student when I come back home and ensures a brighter future for me and the career path I choose. Secondly, I will be living and completely immersing myself in a whole new and different country. I don’t think there is a more exciting privilege in life than to go and discover new places, meet new people, and just surround yourself with traditions and cultures that are entirely different from your own. Getting to experience these things and more is one of the biggest reasons why I want to study abroad. I also believe I will also develop a greater love and appreciation for my own home and country while I am away. I am so excited to learn Spanish and be bilingual! I would return back home with a very attractive resume in hand. Colleges and employers value professionals who can bring something new and unique to the table, such as spending a semester studying in a foreign country. Lastly, I want to make new friends from around the globe. Forming lifelong bonds with people who are from various countries will be an eye-opener to other cultures and will teach me to be more worldly. With their own set of unique backgrounds and perspectives, there’s no doubt I will be having fun as well as opportunities to learn more things about another country. Aside from the deep personal connections, friends are also a great way to establish networking opportunities that could be beneficial in the future.

What do I expect to gain from this experience? I expect to bring home many invaluable skills and expand the assets I already posses. Being in a completely different country by myself will teach me responsibility and independence. I won’t have my family to rely on everything for and will have to figure things out for myself. When I return home, I’ll be able to understand the stories in the news about faraway places that once seemed foreign and distant will feel more personal. I’ll have been to and made friends with people who live in these places, and they will become like second homes. This process of connecting to foreign places and building empathy with people from other cultures will make me a better global citizen, which is a crucial part of living in a global society.

How/what will I give in return for someone’s contribution? If you donate to my cause you are investing in me. I am an ambitious young lady with hopes and dreams with the drive to achieve them. I will post on my blog once a week while I am in Costa Rica to show my contributors what I am learning and experiencing so they can feel more connected and involved with their investment. You get the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped someone achieve their goal and set them up for a bright future.

What have you already done, and what are you planning to do, to contribute to your fundraising efforts? The cost of my program is something I am giving my all to achieve. I have worked hard for this opportunity and plan to continue working hard. I always knew I wanted to do Foreign Exchange, and when I brought it up to make parents they told me to make it happen. I have researched programs, written papers, set up interviews and appointments, met with people, emailed people for information, and kept up with the whole process. When I needed my parents' signature I brought them a paper but I have taken care of the entire process myself. Now I am on the fundraising step, and I would like you to make an investment in me. I am only 15 and I had interviews and sent in applications to multiple businesses and got rejected because I wasn’t the right age, but I finally found a job at a local ice cream shop in my town. I have the initiative to work and raise my own money for my trip. I also mow lawns, clean cars, and can babysit. I have many ideas for fundraisers in the future such as a spaghetti night, car wash, and bake sale.
