Brian Needs a New Heart

Tragically Brian K. Kemp passed away Sunday morning. He was surrounded by love and is no longer hurting. He fought hard for 2 weeks to get home to his family and his heart just wasn’t strong enough. His family is so thankful for the time they had with this wonderful man! Thank you to everyone for all that you did, they will never forget it.
Brian Kemp is a true family man: a husband, father to three young children, son, brother, brother-in-law, and an uncle. He’s the definition of a great father – a pillar of strength, support, and discipline. You can see just how awesome of a dad he is when you meet his kids. Beyond his family, Brian is also a great friend and is willing to go the extra mile to help them.
Brian is the head football coach for both of his sons’ Pop Warner tackle football teams and their baseball coach. Brian has always loved sports. He played football for the South Carolina Gamecocks and was so excited when they made it to the Carquest Bowl in 1995 and won against West Virginia.
But now, this man who so freely shares his heart with so many needs you to open yours to help his family as he fights to survive.

WHAT HAPPENED
On December 30th, as he installed a trampoline in the backyard, a Christmas present for his children, Brian’s chest started to hurt. As a former athlete and someone who is no stranger to hard work, he thought it was just a pulled muscle.
The pain kept getting worse. Unsure of what he should do, Brian called his wife, an ER nurse. She told him he needed to come in and get checked out. By 6 a.m. the next day, the pain had gotten so bad that Brian drove himself to the ER. The doctors said it was a heart attack and immediately began work to save him.
As doctors placed a stent, they noticed blood clots forming. Brian was placed in ICU and put on a machine to help him breathe. Later that night, his heart, kidney and liver started failing. At one point, his heart stopped beating, but staff revived him.
Brian needed to be put on a ventilator and he was prepped to be taken to another hospital to be put on another machine that would do the work of the lungs and the heart for him. Brian needs a new heart to survive.
As they prepped him for the new machine, doctors noticed more blood clots, making it too risky to place an artificial device to support him while he awaits a heart transplant. Brian cannot survive for more than a few weeks on these new machines.
WHAT’S HAPPENING NOW
On the same day he arrived at this new hospital, Brian’s family learned the hospital had ended its agreement with their insurance company for transplants. The hospital and doctors have done a great job working with the family and his insurance to support him with payments, but they still need help.
There is a $10,000 deductible to be met and then the transplant will only be covered at 60%. There are also large medical bills that insurance won’t cover at all, not to mention regular recurring bills and living costs.
With Brian being the main source of family income, there will no doubt be a large financial void. The stress on this family is unimaginable.
