 Bradbury Memorial Scholarship

The Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey association is announcing at their Annual general meeting the creation of an annual cash scholarship and trophy in honor of Port Coquitlams first family of minor hockey.

This award commemorates the Bradbury family’s contribution to the formulation of Port Coquitlams first minor hockey team (The Marcos) and minor hockey executive.

The Bradbury family consisted of Margret and Max and seven boys who all played in the Minor hockey system but the love of refereeing inspired the whole family to commit to making Port Coquitlam one of the finest associations for developing officials. All the boys including Max refereed in the Poco minor system and Margret (Mom) was the referee assigner for Poco and the B.C. amateur hockey association referees for the annual Bantam hockey tournament.

The creation of this memorial was inspired by the tragic loss of the oldest son Neil Bradbury who lost his life in late June 2016. Along with the loss of younger brother Bill and Mom and Max previously.

The tragic loss of Neil Bradbury was a result of when he was on the ice coaching one of the Poco teams. A player slid into him from behind which resulted in Neil hitting his head on the ice and sustaining a major concussion progressing into a degenerating brain disease claiming his life way too early.

Neil’s contribution to Poco minor hockey started when he formulated Poco’s first minor hockey’s team even before there was a minor hockey association. Lobbying the city council for ice time, securing a sponsor, coach and a manager and assembled a team that had to play only exhibition games as it was non-sanctioned but never lost a game that season.

Neil as a referee that was offered an opportunity to attend the N.H.L. pro camp but opted to pursue his career as a national CUPE rep. and start a family with Arlene, the love of his live. He also was a coach and financial supporter of Poco minor hockey and part owner of the Poco Buckaroo’s junior hockey team.

Bill Bradbury was also a high level official at the major junior level and represented Poco minor hockey at the AAA level and went on to play senior AAA hockey.

In memory of the Bradbury family this scholarship was created to honor a Poco minor hockey member who was a player but also an on ice official. This award will be for a minimum of $500.00 along with their name on a custom made trophy memorializing the Bradbury family.

Port Coquitlam minor hockey have authorized us to collect donations for this annual award. We hope to be able to raise $10,000.00 to enable Poco minor hockey to award at least $500.00 per year in perpetuity. More support is needed from those that have been touched by the Bradbury family one way or the other.

December 2016

To Whom It May Concern,

The Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey Association (PCMHA) supports and gives permission to the representatives of the Bradbury Memorial Bursary/Scholarship Fund to solicit money on behalf of PCMHA for the purpose of awarding the Bradbury Memorial Award.  Your monetary donations will be awarded to a deserving member of our association who is both a player and referee for the purpose of furthering his or her career in trade school or refereeing.

The Bradbury family has a long “hockey history” in Port Coquitlam and at one point or another all nine members of their family either played, refereed or volunteered countless hours to both the Marco Hockey Team and later, when it was formed,  PCMHA.

In June of 2016 Neil Bradbury passed away from a brain injury; an injury which he sustained while giving his time as a coach with PCMHA.  Neil was the victim of a tragic fall during which he sustained a major concussion which progressively deteriorated into a degenerative brain disease.  The result of which not only ended Neil’s lengthy years of volunteer service to PCMHA but also ended his career as a national CUPE representative.  During his time with PCMHA, Neil also refereed all levels up to and including the Western Hockey League and the N.H.L. Pro Camp.

It is the hope of both the Bradbury Memorial Bursary/Scholarship Fund and Port Coquitlam Minor Hockey, to raise a minimum of a $500.00 award and that these funds are available for a minimum of at least ten years.  Of course, it is our hope that through your generous donation this could become an award that is sustained over the lifetime of PoCo Minor Hockey.

We hope that you will consider donating to this very deserving and noteworthy cause, we believe it will go a long way to support the young graduates of our minor hockey program and that the significance of its award be a reminder of our commitment to safety measures for all of our players and volunteers within our association.

Thank you very much for your time in considering our request; if you require any further information please contact our President, Kim Egli, at [email redacted]

Respectfully,

The Bradbury Memorial Bursary/Scholarship Fund and
