My name is Ashley. I am a single mother and just opened my own pet grooming salon in April (Doggie Style Maui, www.facebook.com/doggiestylemauigrooming). When I began in the grooming industry, I had no idea what it entailed or what it was about, but after five years in the business I fell in love. I feel blessed to have found a career that I completely enjoy, and find totally fulfilling.
On July 15th a client came to pick up her pet and ended up mistakenly driving her SUV through the building directly into the salon. I was standing with my back facing the window a few feet inside the building directly in the path of the vehicle. The impact drove me into the grooming table I was working at and forced the table and myself through an interior wall into the hallway adjacent to the salon. I came to rest at approximately 20 feet from where I was standing. The driver and passenger of the vehicle are ok and no other persons or pets were injured.
Miraculously I made it through with no broken bones but suffered deep bone and muscle bruising alongside other serious injuries. After nine days at Maui Memorial Medical Center, the doctors informed me that my recovery time could be anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks depending on the severity of some of those injuries.
I have invested all of my savings into this new business as well as incurring a good amount of debt to make my dreams come true. Unfortunately when I created my contingency plan I did not prepare for both my self and my salon to be destroyed. As I focus on my recovery the fear of mounting bills is always present in the back of my mind. I cannot imagine having to give up the dream I have worked so hard for just as it was gaining momentum.
I feel I was born for this industry, caring for furry little family members. Please help me to continue to provide joy and necessary care to those family members who need and deserve it by allowing me to cover my family's living expenses. As my savings and available credit have been depleted in the adventure of chasing my dream.
I am an eternal optimist and I truly believe that every cloud has a silver lining. This whole experience has come to show me how blessed I am to have a fabulous support system of friends and family, as well as clientele who truly appreciate how much I love and care for their pets. I have come to realize how much I miss working and how much joy the pets bring to my life, above providing just a career. My overall goal is to come out of this a better and stronger groomer, mother, friend, business owner, and overall human being. Any monies collected beyond what is needed for me and my family to survive will be invested into making Doggie Style Maui the best grooming salon it can be, by upgrading my facilities and continuing my education. Thank you so much just for spending the time to read my story, and please share. If nothing else, maybe I can inspire another entrepeneur to strive for their goals, despite any and all setbacks.
