In March 2017 Bonnie had her kidney and her gall bladder removed, she had renal cell carcinoma. Then in June 2017, in a 7 hour surgery, she had a tumor removed from her spinal column that had been causing her pain since February 2017. The surgery had 15% chance of being successful with her being able to walk again. Luckily she came out of the surgery able to move everything.
Bonnie started rehabilitation, even with her left side weakened from the spinal cancer, she progressed.
Everyday Bonnie's body changed as the nerves healed. She has been in constant pain. Pain medication doesn't help. Nerve medication does not help. The surgeon that did the surgery said she would be living a normal life within a year.
In September 2017 Bonnie left the rehabilitation center and went home. She continued to progress with her walking, (with a walker), and balance. She seemed to be a couple months away from walking.
Then at the end of November 2017, Bonnie started regressing. A 4 week late MRI showed a tumor on her brain. The tumor was taking her balance away, which meant she could not walk anymore.
Early January 2018 her brain tumor was removed. Luckily, the tumor was on top of her brain. The surgery lasted less than an hour. This meant more rehabilitation.
So back to rehab she went. In the second week at rehab Bonnie rolled her ankle, she could not feel it since she is numb everywhere. After a couple of weeks of walking, (walker assisted), Bonnie went further than she ever had before in rehab. Despite wrapping her ankle and icing it, she finally had to quit trying to walk while the ankle healed.
Since Bonnie was not trying to walk anymore, because of the ankle healing, she was not making progress. Her health insurance company did not like this. Even though: She still needs 24 hour care. She was cleared to be on her feet again to continue rehab. And she still had 50 to 60 days left of rehab. The insurance company sent her home. The two appeals were denied.
With only 1 household income, Bonnie and her family cannot afford the extra nursing care and are struggling with their bills. The cost of the at home nurse is between $4000.00 and $5000.00 a month. She has been denied Social Security Disability, this is being looked into by a lawyer. Friends are helping with the insurance board. But all this takes time. The health insurance company will provide 60 visits of a nurse, a physical therapist, and an occupational therapist combined.
Bonnie has done things differently after the brain surgery. She changed her cancer doctor to one that cares and has a sense of urgency. She will be starting a medication that targets renal cell carcinoma and destroys the cells. She has also endured 10 visits for radiation to her neck and 1 visit of Gamma Knife Radiation for the brain tumor, not to mention, a year of intense nerve pain.
