Release Detained Immigrants as COVID-19 Spreads

I hope everyone reading this is staying safe in the midst of COVID.
COVID has begun to compromise the lives of detained immigrants around the country. Medical experts have continuously warned that detention centers are hotbeds for the spread of pandemics. Physical separation and social distancing are simply impossible and hand soap and laundry detergent are often not supplied. Many detained immigrants are severely immunocompromised due to underlying health conditions that are ignored by ICE’s subpar health system.
COVID does not discriminate, but our country’s social and economic inequalities allow this virus to disproportionately impact the undocumented and imprisoned.
Al Otro Lado works to release asylum seekers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. My team assists clients throughout the entirety of their release process: we gather necessary documents, locate US citizen sponsors, write and file legal motions, and advocate in court. Once detainees win their release in court, they must pay a bond amount set by an immigration judge – averaging between $2,000 and $10,000.
The money raised in this campaign will go directly to Al Otro Lado’s Vida Libre Bond Fund, which pays the full bond amount and secures the immediate release of our clients. Because the US government eventually refunds the bond, that money is returned back into this fund and will be recycled and used to free future clients.
