Bond for Augustin Sajous

Donation protected
Augustin Sajous, a lawful permanent resident who came to the United States in 1972 at the age of fourteen, was detained by ICE almost nine months ago based on two convictions for bending MetroCards for free rides. Mr. Sajous has suffered from schizophrenia for many years and was formerly homeless, living in supportive housing in Queens. He is now sixty years old.

In one of the first rulings of its kind since the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Jennings v. Rodriguez, which found that the Immigration and Nationality Act authorized virtually permanent detention for immigrants with pending cases, a federal judge in New York found that Mr. Sajous’s prolonged detention violated the U.S. Constitution and ordered a bond hearing on his behalf. Mr. Sajous’s case was profiled a few weeks back in the Huffington Post (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/immigrant-detention-courts_us_5b0725f0e4b0802d69c958d3) and WNYC (https://www.wnyc.org/story/judge-rules-detained-haitian-immigrant-must-get-bond-hearing/), among others.

This past Monday, June 4, an immigration judge held the court-ordered bond hearing for Mr. Sajous and found that he should be released under $3,000 bond. This was a huge victory for Mr. Sajous, his team, and everyone fighting to bring detained immigrants home to their families and communities. All that’s left to get Mr. Sajous back into his supportive housing and connect him to the services he needs is that last $3,000 to pay his ICE bond. This is where you come in. Mr. Sajous’s nightmare could finally come to an end just days after your donation.

In the future, Mr. Sajous hopes to finally become a U.S. citizen.

Mr. Sajous is represented in immigration court by Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS), and in federal court by BDS and the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU). Barring unforeseen circumstances, the bond money raised here will be returned to Mr. Sajous at the close of his case to assist with his continued reintegration into the community.
